JOB PURPOSE:
The Curator of the Arts of China and Japan is responsible for the development of this area of the collection, including its documentation, research, preservation, presentation, and growth. An endowed position, the Associate Curator/Curator reports to the Associate Director for Collections, Exhibitions, and Curatorial Affairs, works with other museum curators and educators, develops partnerships with faculty throughout the University, and engages students from all disciplines in learning about the art. We are especially interested in a curator who has extensive historical knowledge of the arts of China and Japan, who can also offer new and fresh perspectives on the collection, while also integrating contemporary art and issues into the collection and exhibition program.

The successful candidate will have the ability to work with faculty to integrate the use of the Center’s collections into the teaching curriculum. The curator will also have demonstrated experience to foster appreciation and understanding of art through teaching, lecturing, and organizing exhibitions, and educational programs. We are looking for a creative individual who enjoy contributing in a team-oriented environment, and will thoughtfully transmit their knowledge, ideas, and enthusiasm to visitors, volunteers, students, faculty, and staff.

CORE DUTIES*:

  • Conceive, research, develop and collaborate with colleagues to organize and mount changing exhibitions of varying scope; develop related programming, including lectures, symposia and other educational programs.
  • Develop collections through selectively acquiring important objects through purchase and gifts; cultivate prospective donors and art dealers.
  • Monitor and manage the stewardship needs of donors in adherence to the university’s stewardship standards.
  • Develop rotations of the collections for display in permanent collection galleries; consult with others to determine preservation/conservation needs.
  • Research, write and oversee production of related publications, brochures, guides, catalogs and books.
  • Develop and oversee collaborative projects with faculty and staff, oversee project budgets.
  • Develop a cooperative and productive relationship between the Center and the art community.
  • Develop, prepare and maintain exhibition budgets, serve as a liaison to the University community, other institutions and the public.
  • Participate in teaching courses at the Museum, training and continuing education of staff, mentor student interns.
  • Overall planning and development of the permanent collection, which includes objects in several media from China, Tibet, Japan, Korea, India, Southeast Asia and the Philippines. The strengths of the collections are in the arts of China and Japan. We build on these strengths through selective purchases and the encouragement of gifts. An active changing exhibitions program supplements the display of the Cantor Arts Center collection. The curator will develop exhibitions, some of which will travel to other institutions. The curator is also responsible for soliciting and evaluating proposals for exhibitions organized at other institutions and coordinates the presentation at Stanford of those selected. The curator also solicits, encourages, and helps faculty members and qualified students to develop exhibition proposals that are derived from primary research. On occasion the curator may teach using the collection directly in the academic program.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education & Experience:
Ph.D. preferred with a minimum of 5 years of related experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and professionalism to interact with a wide range of people at different levels of an organization.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication, demonstrated presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated experience and background in research and published writing that establishes expertise in an area of study.
  • Proven ability to effectively and efficiently manage multiple priorities, with competing deadlines.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in MS Office Suite and database management applications.
  • Demonstrated project management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to build effective long-term relationships both internally and externally and the ability to clearly articulate and advocate the Center’s goals.
  • Proven experience working with collectors and donor cultivation.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Frequently perform desk based computer tasks, seated work and use light/ fine grasping.
  • Occasionally stand, walk, and write by hand, lift, carry, push pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.

    WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • May work extended or non-standard hours, weekends and holidays based on business needs.
