The Fort Collins Museum of Discovery (FCMoD) is seeking a seasoned museum professional for the position of Exhibits Manager. FCMoD opened three years ago in a brand new facility featuring over 21,000 square feet of exhibit space. Blending science, culture, and history, FCMoD tells global stories through a local lens via hands-on interactive experiences and traditional artifact-based story telling. This position will lead the exhibit department in designing in-house exhibits, managing a traveling exhibit program, and working closely with contract designers and fabricators to finish the initial build out of the long-term galleries. SUMMARY:  Under the general direction of the Assistant Museum Director, responsible for the design, fabrication, installation and maintenance of Fort Collins Museum of Discovery exhibitions.  Also responsible for graphic production of print and electronic media.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES  The following duties and responsibilities are illustrative of the primary functions of this position and are not intended to be all inclusive.

  • Designs, develops, constructs and installs exhibit structures, artifact mounts, graphic elements, and label text for in-house exhibitions.
  • Works closely with outside contractors for fabrication and installation of long-term and traveling exhibits.
  • Works cooperatively with the Exhibition Development Team to translate concepts into exhibition format and print and electronic graphics.
  • Cooperatively plans with Exhibition Development Team production schedules for designing, constructing, and installing exhibit components.
  • Responsible for maintenance and upkeep of all exhibit components.
  • Working with graphics specialist, provides graphic design services for exhibition text and graphics, Museum publications such as newsletters, indoor and outdoor signage, and Museum web site.
  • Cooperatively determines exhibition budget; responsible for monitoring installation budget.
  • Utilizes preventive conservation techniques in the handling and exhibition of artifacts.
  • Oversees work of exhibits assistant.
  • Recruits and supervises volunteers and interns in the installation of exhibitions.
  • Oversees the Museum shop area, including inventorying and purchasing supplies and maintaining the shop, tools, and equipment.
  • Participates actively and positively in group administrative problem solving, decision making and long term strategic planning.
Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the necessary functions of this position.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  

  • Knowledge of media, methods, and materials used in exhibition design and construction.
  • Knowledge of basic carpentry techniques, and proper use of hand tools, and power tools.
  • Knowledge of basic electrical wiring and lighting, paint, adhesives, finishes, and applicable safety practices.
  • Knowledge of audio-video equipment.
  • Knowledge of accepted museum standards for the care, handling, and exhibition of artifacts and artworks.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and schematic drawings.
  • Ability to utilize graphic design software to create graphic elements and Museum publications.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to keep and maintain accurate records.
  • Ability of organize and schedule design and production of exhibits to meet schedule requirements.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  Associate’s degree, with focus on fine arts, design, history, museum studies, or construction, plus four years of related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Bachelor’s degree preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:  Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:  Valid driver’s license.
