Description
This position is part of the Kenosha Public Museums system, a department of the City of Kenosha and is under the direction of the Museum Director, Coordinator of the Education Department, or his/her designee. The Educator develops, implements, and evaluates workshops and public programs; develops, implements and evaluates school and adult group programs and outreach programs; serves in the capacity of Museums Staff in Charge as assigned; and participates in and supports Museums strategic planning and interdepartmental work teams. Regularly scheduled hours are Monday-Friday but must be available to work some weekends and evenings. Work is reviewed through conferences and written reports for adherence to established policies and procedures and through observation of results obtained. Performs other work as requested or assigned.
Example of Duties & Responsibilities:
- Manages, develops, implements and evaluates pre K-12th grade group programs and experiences – on-site, outreach and digital – and adult group tour experiences.
- Trains, coordinates, and supervises volunteers working in public education areas at the Civil War Museum and at the Kenosha Public Museum.
- Supervises, schedules and trains staff in the Civil War Museum Resource Center (education space) and oversees overall operations of the Resource Center. Makes personnel recommendations for Resource Center staff to the Coordinator of the Education Department.
- Develops, oversees and implements social studies and anthropology public programs, special events and family programs at the Civil War Museum and the Kenosha Public Museum.
- Develops and oversees educational loan resources and collections.
- Conducts group and outreach programs on an as needed basis.
- Purchases supplies for public programs and group programs.
- Maintains records related to educational program attendance; builds and improves research and resource files; prepares reports.
- Performs Staff in Charge responsibilities as required and serves on the Museums Operations Team.
- Participates in and supports Museums strategic planning and interdepartmental work teams.
- Works in collaboration with the Staff of the Interpretation Division in the development of innovative exhibits and integrate new learning strategies at the Civil War Museum and the Kenosha Public Museum.
- Interacts with Kenosha Unified School District and other school districts’ teachers and administrators to build and maintain a working relationship including development of teacher professional development opportunities and teacher advisory committees.
- Stays current on trends in education, the museum field and society.
- Serves as an educational advocate.
- Performs other duties as assigned or requested
Requirements
Training and Experience:
- Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in History, American History, Natural History, Education, Museology, Library Science or related field.
- Two to three years of classroom teaching or museum education experience preferred.
- An equivalent combination of training and experience may also be considered.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of museum organization, procedures, aims and services.
- General knowledge of early American history and pre-history.
- Ability to keep records and prepare reports.
- Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
- Knowledge of current research in learning, learning styles, and education methodology.
- Knowledge of national social studies standards and benchmarks.Knowledge of distance learning technology and programming.
- Ability to plan and supervise the work of others.
- Ability to develop and conduct programs for visitors of all ages.Knowledge of database, word processing, electronic/digital media and other relevant computer programs.
- Ability to work well with others and maintain professional manner using tact, initiative, good judgment and confidentiality.
- Ability to handle reasonably necessary stress.
Physical Requirements:
- Task is essentially sedentary, with occasional walking, driving of an automobile, bending, light to medium lifting, and other restricted physical activities;
Environmental Requirements:
- Task may require infrequent exposure to adverse environmental conditions.

Additional Requirements:
Possession of a valid driver’s license and a good driving record. May be required to provide a personal vehicle for use on the job.
Selection will be based upon a review of education and experience to evaluate the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary for successful job performance. Appointment will be made in accordance with City of Kenosha policy and Civil Service Rules and Regulations.
Method of Selection:
No person can be employed who has a relative already employed by the City of Kenosha in a position covered by the Civil Service Ordinance or who has a relative in any elected office/position in City of Kenosha government, as defined in Section V of the Civil Service Ordinance. “Relative” includes any member of the immediate household; or anyone whose relationship by blood or marriage is as close or closer than first-cousin, including “step” relationships; or any grandparent or grandchild.
