POSITION OVERVIEW
Reporting to the Director of Educational Programs, the Interpretive Programs Manager is responsible for managing, assessing, and growing the 9/11 Memorial Museum’s Interpretive programming, consisting of the Interpretive Guide Program and Docent Program. Paid guides lead public tours in the Museum and on the Memorial. Volunteer docents give short talks at artifacts. The position will be responsible for ensuring that both cohorts consistently provide Memorial and Museum visitors with an engaging educational experience.
This position is responsible for the management, operations, and administrative functions of both programs, including the hiring and training of new guides and docents, oversight of the programs’ operations and logistics, daily scheduling, staff and program assessment, program growth, and some clerical duties. This position manages a staff who help supervise the respective programs.
This is a flexible position and will require evening and weekend work.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Interpretive Guide Program
- Oversee the daily management and long-term growth of the Interpretive Guide program.
- Manage the hiring and training of new Interpretive Guides.
- Develop new trainings and enrichment opportunities for Interpretive Guides, as needed.
- Work with other relevant staff to formalize systems, policies and procedures for the Interpretive Guide program, including troubleshooting logistical issues.
- Supervise and provide feedback to supervisory staff in the Interpretive Guide Program.
- Coordinate all daily aspects of the program, including logistics, scheduling, and timesheets.
- Under the guidance of the Director of Educational Programs, develop and implement new interpretive experiences for Museum visitors.
- Collaborate with Director of Educational Programs to develop and implement an evaluation and assessment program.
- Other duties as assigned.
Docent Responsibilities:
- Oversee the recruitment, screening, and orientation of a diverse, quality docent corps.
Develop and implement a comprehensive training program for docents. - Work with other relevant staff to formalize systems, policies and procedures for the docent program.
- Supervise and provide feedback to Interpretive Program Coordinators.
- With the help of the Interpretive Programs Coordinators, coordinate all aspects of both programs, including daily logistics, scheduling, and ongoing retention efforts.
- Under the guidance of the Director of Educational Programs, and in collaboration with docents and other appropriate departments, continue to develop and implement interpretive experiences for Museum visitors.
- Ensure that all content provided by and to docents is vetted for authenticity and accuracy.
- Collaborate with Director of Educational Programs to develop and implement an evaluation and assessment program.
Docent relations:
- Provide docents with effective and responsive support and supervision to ensure an enjoyable and rewarding experience.
- Regularly communicate in a timely manner with docents in the Museum and via phone, email, and mail, providing information about Museum programs, scheduling, activities, etc.
- Model for docents appropriate public engagement, including interpretive skills and knowledge of content.
- Effectively facilitate and participate in docent meetings.
- Provide timely, relevant, and accurate information to docents through pre-shift talks, participation in and facilitation of formal and informal discussions and meetings.
- Offer formal and informal opportunities for docent feedback and dialogue.
- Research, communicate, and/or coordinate educational and other benefit opportunities for docents.
- Effectively use technology to communicate with docents and track individual docents’ relevant statistics.
- Use computerized scheduling program.
- Responsibly and accurately process all expenditures and collection of funds.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS/SKILL REQUIREMENTS
- College degree or equivalent required.
- Experience coordinating museum interpretive programs.
- Knowledge of and experience with volunteer management concepts and best practices.
- Basic knowledge of museum engagement concepts and best practices.
- Highly organized; able to organize details and schedules.
- Self-starter, takes initiative, works well independently.
- Excellent communication skills, including telephone, interpersonal, and written skills.
- Able to interact professionally and appropriately with staff, volunteers, and the public.
- Ability to organize and facilitate meetings.
- Command of a second language preferred.
- Able to work weekends and evenings.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, Outlook calendaring, and relevant database software.
- Able to prioritize continually shifting tasks; reliable and able to follow tasks through to completion in a timely manner.
- Ability to accept guidance, direction, and supervision; able to give feedback and share ideas appropriately and professionally.
- Must adhere to a policy of strict confidentiality in terms of information regarding 9/11 victims, bid documents, security and life safety incidents, and labor relations.
