POSITION SUMMARY
The Senior Communications Manager is responsible for developing and driving the Museum’s communications strategy and instituting a world class level of writing to deliver high impact content for various channels and audiences. This person will also be responsible for media outreach and content distribution, as well as increasing the Museum’s thought leadership position. This full-time, exempt position reports to the Associate Director of Communications and Marketing.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategy and planning
• With the Associate Director of Communications and Marketing, develop and implement a comprehensive communications and content plan, including budget, strategy/tactics, goals, target audiences and distribution

Messaging
• Play key role in developing institutional messaging that informs content on website, print collateral, signage, presentations, media talking points, etc.

Content creation, management and distribution
• Draft original content and adapt existing content from research white papers and academic articles to be accessible and engaging for other audiences (educators, parents, policymakers) for blog, op-eds, newsletter, e-news, etc.
• Manage content distribution, sharing and syndication through various media outlets and partner channels
• Innovate content mechanisms to include videos and infographics
• Serve as editor and primary writer of blog; create editorial calendar with combination of planned content and real-time responses to trending stories, solicit guest bloggers, and implement strategies for improved engagement
• Serve as editor and primary writer of quarterly print newsletter and internal Staff newsletter

Media relations
• Monitor news, develop story angles, pitch targeted reporters and publications, facilitate interviews, prep spokespeople, track/share relevant articles
• Develop, manage and execute press release strategy, oversee posting to websiteand wire and distribution to media list

• Pitch and develop news-driven op-eds for daily papers and online

Speaking opportunities
• Play key role in the evaluation and prioritization of speaking opportunities, help evaluate audiences and media attendees and coordinate communications support

Digital and social media
• Develop, manage and execute digital and social media strategy to grow presence and engagement
• Manage and execute content across website and social platforms
• Leverage packaged content, e.g. infographics and videos

Reporting/measurement
• Monitor, analyze and report on key metrics, including media coverage, web site traffic, social engagement, etc.

Partnerships
• Cultivate relationships with like-minded partners to collaborate with and leverage each other’s work

Requirements

• 5-7 years of agency or in-house communications experience, preferably in related field (early childhood development, education, nonprofit, or museums)
• Top-notch writing skills with proven ability to translate complex research into accessible, shareable posts and actionable tips
• Strong organizational and project management skills
• Outstanding attention to detail
• Experience with a range of social media and digital tools
• General comfort using technology and learning new platforms
• A sense of humor and appreciation for a fast-moving, agile organization
• Personal interest in and commitment to the mission of the Bay Area Discovery Museum
• Proven track record designing and executing successful communications campaigns, particularly in packaging and distribution of expert content and media relations
• Skilled as both a tactical executor and creative, strategic thought partner
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team
• Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, English or related field
