POSITION:                         Gallery Director – Herron School of Art and Design

Indiana University Purdue University – Indianapolis (IUPUI)

RANK/SALARY:                   Academic Specialist position. Full-time, 12 months.

Salary commensurate with experience, and includes an excellent benefits package.

START DATE:                      July 1, 2016 or as soon as possible.

GALLERY MISSION:          

The missions of the Herron Galleries are to complement the educational and community outreach goals of the Herron School of Art and Design. The galleries serve as a forum for the evolving dialogue of contemporary art, design and culture. The Herron Galleries feature work created by regional, national, and international artists and designers that is often coupled with public lectures and workshops.

The Herron Galleries play a significant role in connecting with the campus and community—including youth and adults, businesses, and art patrons. Gallery exhibitions and visiting artist lectures are critical in providing an avenue for new and diverse audiences to become engaged with Herron.

RESPONSIBILITIES:          

The Director will report to the Dean of the Herron School of Art and Design and will work closely with faculty to develop programming for the Herron Galleries that support academic curricula, advance scholarship, and expand research opportunities.

The Director will be charged with bringing notable contemporary artists, designers, and scholars to the galleries, reinforcing the educational goals of the school, and promoting the programs to the university and community. The Director works with Exhibition and Visiting Artist Committee, the Dean, the Director of Development, and external volunteers to support gallery exhibitions, lectures, educational components and community engagement activities.

The Gallery Director coordinates and administers all aspects of the Herron School of Art and Design art galleries to include the following: implementation of programming policy; curate and organize exhibitions to include selection of artists and designers, publicity materials; solicitation of guest curators and traveling exhibitions; coordination with other exhibition venues; maintenance and inventory of permanent collection; and supervision of the assistant, and student workers. The Gallery Director will also promote collaborations with other cultural organizations in the community.

The Director will oversee gallery and exhibition budgets and all financial considerations especially the development of funding sources including grant writing and philanthropic engagement (local, national and international sources), to be coordinated with the Dean, and Development Director.

THE SETTING:

The Herron School of Art and Design is a professional school with a community of 850 degree-seeking students and 65 full and part-time faculty members.

Herron School of Art and Design’s new building opened in June 2005 and has become a landmark on the campus of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI).

The School and galleries are well positioned on the edge of the IUPUI campus in the cultural heart of downtown Indianapolis.  It serves as a cultural link between campus and community.

The Herron School of Art and Design is located on the IUPUI campus. Herron has three gallery spaces within the school, each serving different missions. The main galleries (approximately 3,000 sq. ft.) host regional, national, and international exhibitions. The other two galleries (approximately 500 sq. ft. and 1,200 sq. ft) primarily serve students, faculty and alumni exhibitions and special project installations.

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis is an urban research campus with 22 schools and academic units which grant degrees in over 200 programs from both Indiana University and Purdue University. With over 30,000 students, IUPUI is the second-largest campus in the Indiana University statewide system.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:                   

Applicants should hold a master’s degree in a visual arts discipline and three years relevant career experience. MA or MFA preferred. Abilities preferred are those of a curator/director who has a demonstrated record of success in the planning, coordination and execution of all related programs/exhibits and events, as well as day-to day operations. They should demonstrate significant experience with the planning and implementation of interdisciplinary, curricular and/or community based educational programming. The applicant should show evidence of expertise in curatorial projects that are innovative and of high repute in the arts community. The applicant should show evidence of successful writing skills in proposals and reporting. The Gallery Director should have knowledge of and experience in the physical aspects of gallery preparation, installation, and maintenance.
