Manager of University Programs

The Ackland Art Museum seeks a dynamic educator to coordinate and build its academic programs for undergraduate and graduate students, faculty members, departments, and professional schools at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The University is a major research institution with a student population of 29,000 and a commitment to interdisciplinary studies and diversity. Key areas of responsibility include working with faculty members to develop class sessions and assignments in diverse academic disciplines and short term gallery installations that support specific course objectives. The successful candidate will have a commitment to scholarship and teaching with objects in a museum setting. The Ackland Art Museum has an encyclopedic collection of over 17,000 works of art with strengths in European, American, Asian, and Contemporary art, and photography, prints and drawings. The Manager of University Programs reports to the Director of Academic Programs.

Responsibilities include the following:

Administration: Expands participation among faculty and departments that have not traditionally used the Museum’s resources, as well as among those who have; assists the director of academic University in developing an annual budget for University programs, and ensures that academic programs fall within budgetary guidelines; represents the Academic Programs department on Museum committees.

Teaching: In consultation with faculty, teaches class sessions in the galleries that support specific curricular objectives; develops and writes educational materials for university audiences, in print and on-line; assists director of academic programs and other museum staff as needed with training programs for faculty and graduate instructors in object-based teaching and museum methods, and with development of new museum-based courses;

Collection and Exhibition Interpretation: Designs and presents study gallery installations that support specific curricular objectives; collaborates with faculty and students to design and create interpretive materials and public programs that represent university perspectives.

Program Development: Represents the Museum through consistent interaction with university faculty, students, and staff; assists the Director of Academic Programs in developing collaborative initiatives that support the Museum’s essential role in the academic agenda of the University; attends and presents at national professional conferences on behalf of the Museum; establishes and maintains professional affiliations with colleagues in similar positions within university art museums and galleries nationwide.

The Ackland Art Museum will provide compensation commensurate with experience. This is a full-time, permanent appointment.

Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in art history or related discipline, with 5 years of directly related experience required; PhD preferred.  Demonstrated experience teaching college students in the classroom and/or in museum settings.  Current knowledge of field of specialization (content, current standards for best practice and research, and new developments)
  • Excellent communications skills and the ability to work independently and in collaboration with museum staff, and university faculty and students.
