Director of the Castle Gallery at The College of New Rochelle, New Rochelle, NY

 

The Castle Gallery at The College of New Rochelle, located in New Rochelle, NY, is seeking a full-time Director with a preferred start date of April 1, 2016. This award-winning gallery has received wide critical attention and has been frequently profiled in the New York Times Westchester Arts Section.  Its exhibitions have included contemporary fine art, applied design, fine craft, and material culture. The position requires a creative thinker with excellent communication skills, who will be responsible for all administrative and operational aspects of the Castle Gallery and two other galleries on the New Rochelle campus. The Director will support the educational mission of the College through curatorial direction, educational programs, strategic development, fundraising, administration, and public relations. In addition, the Director will manage the College’s art collection, which includes photographs by Ansel Adams, Gordon Parks and Toni Parks.

 

Responsibilities include:

  • Development and expansion of goals, vision and quality of exhibitions and programming
  • Management and coordination of all gallery exhibition and events. This includes exhibition design and installation, publicity, event planning and overseeing part-time staff, interns, invited curators and outside vendors
  • Fundraising and grants development; working with College development staff on outreach and funding iniatives
  • Development of planning iniatives to maintain and strengthen professional networks and affilliations with local, county, state and national arts organizations
  • Working in close collaboration with Castle Gallery Board and its subcommittees and CNR faculty to expand curricular integration
  • Working with college staff and New Rochelle community members to deepen relationship with students, residents, artists and local businesses
  • Maintaining regular communication with College administration and Board
  • Oversight and management of gallery record keeping system
Requirements

Requirements for the position include:

  • 3-5  years relevant professional experience in a museum, gallery, non-profit arts development and/or special events
  • Master’s Degree in art history, museum education, museum studies, arts administration, curatorial practice, studio art or the equivalent
  • Detail-oriented, with excellent information management skills
  • Creative thinking, with the ability to multitask and adapt to change
  • Strong writing and editing skills with demonstrated research experience
  • A record of securing grants and raising funds
  • Excellent communication skills and experience working with administration, boards, art professionals, students, and potential funders
  • Expertise in public relations with a working knowledge of social media communication and technology
  • Proficiency in databases relevant to the operation and management of a gallery

 

The Castle Gallery is centrally located on the suburban campus of The College of New Rochelle in the historic Leland Castle, within a half hour train ride of New York City. Administratively, the gallery is under the Office of Academic Affairs and the SAS Dean’s Office; the Director reports to the Arts Coordinator and works closely with the Castle Gallery Board of Directors.
