Description

Plattsburgh State Art Museum at SUNY College at Plattsburgh invites applications for a Museum Preparator. The ideal candidate will be detail oriented, with a commitment to the care and management of over 10,000 art objects, and a changing exhibition program, a willingness to work one-on-one with students, and an appreciation of museum objects and knowledge of their care and presentation in traditional and non-traditional spaces. This individual will report directly to the Director of the Museum.

Responsibilities include: Physically handle delicate and valuable works of art with extreme care; Work from sketches and follow oral instructions as to construction and installation of museum exhibits; Pack and unpack art objects, keeping adequate related supplies on hand; Coordinate the exhibition schedule; Instruct other employees/students on proper handling and preparation techniques; Build containers or oversee contracts for outside assembly of such, after working with collections manager on developing specifications; Prepare art via matting, mounting, framing, and making minor repairs with director’s approval; Work with director/curator in planning and designing installations, including preparation of scale drawings and models as needed; Install exhibitions in multiple galleries and non-traditional exhibit spaces;  Install labels and didactic wall copy; Build/contract to build props, signs and promotional material using current technology; Work with Maintenance and Operations for the painting of gallery walls, electrical wiring, and other facility requirements; Assess need for building maintenance and repairs and monitors performance of maintenance personnel; Keep records of temperature and relative humidity within the facility; Evaluate emergency and safety procedures with campus emergency and safety committees and presents to staff; Responsible for daily security and opening and lock-up of galleries.

Requirements

Required Qualifications: BA degree in fine arts, art history or a related field from an accredited college or university, plus a minimum of two to three years of experience working with museum exhibition installation and collections.

Thorough knowledge of preparing works of art for display; Thorough knowledge of framing, matting and hanging exhibitions; Knowledge of designing, fabrications, construction and installation of museum exhibits; Knowledge of artistic material and processes, as well as display and lighting techniques; Ability to supervise the work of others, including students; Ability to establish and maintain effective, tactful, and courteous working relationships with fellow employees, faculty members, department heads and the general public; Ability to work under the pressure of deadlines; Flexibility in context of changing schedules and designs; Ability to work with a wide range of artists in different media (including electronic media) to resolve installation concerns in a timely and courteous manner; Ability to communicate effectively in a culturally and ethnically diverse campus community; Experience effectively maintaining accurate and thorough records. Ability to safely handle and install works of art in all media, as well as  handle art and crating, carpentry and fabrication, and/or exhibit preparation; Willingness and ability to transport art objects approximately four to five times annually; and the ability to use standard office software programs including Word, Excel and Access. This position also requires a valid driver license; the ability to safely lift and move up to 50 lbs; and the ability to operate various lifts safely.

Preferred Qualifications: Thorough knowledge of wood working and metal working; Material knowledge of: physical plant operations, budget and fiscal management processes and procedures, special events set up and tear down, and project management principles, practices, techniques, and tools; and the ability to effectively communicate with others in producing desired exhibitions.
