Development Consultant

Description:
A part-time position, initially at one day per week on a flexible schedule, the Development Consultant will have primary responsibility for developing and implementing a broad advancement program for the Salem Athenæum. The Salem Athenæum is a contemporary and historic library in Salem that provides a forum for the exchange of ideas and lifelong learning for the North Shore. It is one of 16 membership libraries in the United States, with a proven track record of success in combining its focus on history with a sense of exploration and fun. A heavily volunteer-driven organization, the Athenæum is looking to expand advancement effectiveness.

The key objectives of the position are to enhance friend-raising and fundraising objectives in support of the Athenæum, its collections, facilities, and programming, and to prepare the Athenæum for a capital campaign. Building upon its success in the community, the Athenæum seeks to move into a phase of much stronger public support through increased membership and more active public philanthropy. We will look to our Development Consultant to ably assist in these endeavors.

The candidate for this position will need to present evidence of considerable energy and enthusiasm for the Athenæum’s mission: the preservation and enhancement of the literary and cultural passions of the North Shore. The consultant will work closely with the Athenæum Board, the Athenæum Director and the Development Committee. The consultant must be entrepreneurial, self-starting, multi-tasking, capable of recruiting and using volunteers, and able to make strategic decisions regarding the most advantageous development efforts. The Development Consultant must be particularly effective in communicating and in forming and maintaining good working relationships, as these skills will be critical to success. The Athenæum seeks a “can do” attitude.

The Development Consultant will work with the Director, Board of Trustees and Development Committee to:

? Establish priorities and goals for the development program

? Establish plans and activities for building capacity

? Increase membership

? Pursue grants

? Cultivate new and existing upper level donors

Qualifications:
? Bachelor’s degree required

? Five years’ experience working in a development department in a non-profit organization

? Some volunteer or stewardship experience preferred

? Excellent interpersonal, communications and writing skills

? Careful attention to detail and proven respect for deadlines

? Impeccable judgment and strong decision-making skills

? Keen problem-solving skills

? Excellent skills with Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat

? Experience with relational donor database systems strongly preferred
