Rare Books and Manuscripts Research Assistant

The Boston Athenæum seeks a knowledgeable, aesthetically-oriented, and enthusiastic student of the book to research and organize an extensive collection of the work of the Merrymount Press which was founded by Daniel Berkeley Updike and operated in Boston from 1896 to 1949.This part-time (22 hours per week) position, which reports to the Curator of Rare Books and Manuscripts, will join the Athenæum – a membership library with extensive special collections and a fine arts collection – during a period of growth, following the adoption of a new operational plan that will inform an anticipated capital campaign.

Responsibilities

· Develops a complete inventory of the collection of approximately 17,000 job tickets and examples of printing that give an extraordinary picture of the type of work done at the Merrymount Press.

· Organizes the associated collection of original art work that was commissioned by Daniel Berkeley Updike for various books and design projects produced by the Merrymount Press.

· Plans an appropriate exhibition and accompanying catalogue of the Merrymount Press Collection.

· Supports the Curator of Rare Books and Manuscripts in other research projects as assigned.

Qualifications:

Qualifications

· Extensive knowledge of the history of the book, a love of graphic design and an enthusiasm for the social history of Boston as exemplified by the list of professional and personal clients of the Merrymount Press.

· Bachelor’s degree in the Arts and Humanities.

· A self-starter with the capacity to work independently and as a part of a team.

· Diplomatic, and comfortable communicating with a range of people.

· Collegial, collaborative, and diplomatic with colleagues.

· Friendly, open, engaging, and respectful with patrons.

· Committed to fostering diversity and supporting a culture of inclusion.

· Must be able to lift 40 pounds.
