Department Description
For over 30 years, the University Art Museum (UAM) has introduced numerous artists from diverse fields to a broad audience, both nationally and internationally, and has showcased many of the most significant artistic and cultural developments of the past 50 years.  The UAM program of dynamic solo exhibitions and landmark group presentations define key moments in contemporary art, reflect the global nature of art today, and span a vast array of cultural activities and media.
Time Base/Hours/Units per Week
Full- time. Nights & weekends as needed to accommodate operational needs.
Position Description
In consultation with the Dean of the College of the Arts and university and museum stake-holders, the Director of the University Art Museum is responsible for developing and implementing the strategic vision and long-range plans for the museum with particular emphasis on the role and mission of an Art Museum in a university context. The Director is responsible for all museum operations and programs including selection and presentation of exhibitions and educational programs, oversight of the care and storage of the permanent collections; fund raising; grant-writing; financial administration; personnel supervision; advocating for the museum and the arts; and liaising with university administrators, faculty, the advisory board and the greater community.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Ability to provide strong leadership, vision and strategic direction. Experience developing and implementing strategic plans. Demonstrated knowledge of all aspects of curatorial work including exhibition research, development and installation. Demonstrated knowledge of standards and best practices for museums or non-profits. Strong record of success in fundraising and audience development. Strong record of success in grant-writing. Demonstrated excellence in writing and public speaking. Proven ability to work effectively with Boards, volunteers, and in community relations and outreach capacities. Competence in managing museum operations, including personnel matters. Demonstrated ability to supervise, as well as to work successfully with museum staff, volunteers, and diverse public constituencies. Evidence of success in developing, managing, and growing an annual operating budget. Evidence of commitment to educational functions of art and museum exhibitions and functions.
Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community.  Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures.  Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student, and assist in achieving the university’s commitment to a “vision of excellence.”

The duties of this position will include participation in decisions that may have a material financial benefit to the incumbent. Therefore, the selected candidate will be required to file Conflict of Interest Form 700: Statement of Economic Interest on an annual basis, complete ethics training within 6 months of appointment, and attend this training every other year thereafter.

Requirements
Education and Experience
Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in a related field and a minimum of seven years of related experience required.
MA or MFA in studio art, art history, curatorial studies, arts administration (terminal degrees preferred); Ph.D or Ed.D with extensive background in studio art or art history; extensive background in museum/art center programming and operations; at least two years in managerial/supervisory positions is preferred.
