Curator, Museum

The Skirball Cultural Center seeks an audience-minded, detail-oriented, multitasking team member with superior research, writing, and communications skills for the position of Curator in the Museum department. Guided by the Skirball’s mission and inclusive perspective, the Curator will develop a dynamic range of exhibitions, create original content, and support the efforts of the entire museum.

The Curator will lead project teams, collaborating with other curators as well as Education, Design, Registration, Programs, and Marketing to ensure that projects meet the highest professional standards while fostering the museum’s values of relevance, innovation, and broad audience engagement.  The Curator will also work with Development to help find resources necessary to sustain exhibitions, programs, and publications.

The Curator reports to the Chief Curator. This is a full-time position with benefits.

Responsibilities:

–          Identification, development, and selection of exhibitions, including originating exhibition concepts and preparing exhibition proposals appropriate to the Skirball’s mission and goals.

–          Curatorial leadership in interdepartmental exhibition project teams through each phase of development for both in-house produced exhibitions and packaged traveling exhibitions.

–          Preparation of budgets and grants; accountability for curatorial deadlines and objectives essential to a successful on-time and on-budget exhibition.

–          Researching exhibition topics and providing content in accord with exhibition objectives, including writing and editing of exhibition didactics.

–          Establishing productive relationships across museum departments and the larger Skirball.

–          Supporting exhibition programming and publicity with Education, Programs, Marketing, and Advancement.

–          Fostering productive relationships with other local and national institutions and cultural and community organizations.

Qualifications:

–          MA or PhD in relevant field such as art history, photography, film studies, U.S. history, public history, Jewish history, anthropology, or museum studies

–          Three to five years curatorial experience working within a museum setting

–          Demonstrated experience and record of conceptualizing, researching, and planning exhibitions

–          Excellent oral and written communication skills, with strong interpersonal skills and ability to develop productive relationships across the organization.

–          Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, deadlines, and follow-through.

–          A keen appreciation and understanding of the Skirball Cultural Center mission and philosophy.

Requirements

Qualifications:
