EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Position Scope and Objectives:  The Executive Director of the Museum of the Marine (MOTM) is responsible for the development, execution and management of the policies, programs and initiatives of the Museum as directed by its Board of Directors (BOD) in its mission of preserving and presenting the unique history of the United States Marine Corps in the Carolinas.

QUALIFICATIONS:

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. 1.       Serves as the MOTM’s spokesperson and public point of contact, including interaction with the media, community associations and others as necessary and appropriate.
  2. 2.       Oversees and coordinates fundraising and donor management activities.  Identifies and implements new initiatives and partnerships to grow revenue.
  3. 3.      Manages daily activities of the MOTM
    1. a.       Recommends and administers policies and procedures to the BOD.
    2. b.      Develops an annual budget and an annual work plan for the BOD.
    3. c.       Participates in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies and priorities for the organization, i.e., the Strategic Plan.
    4. d.      In conjunction with the BOD, develops strategies for enhancing the MOTM.
    5. e.      Develops and maintains a close and effective working relationship with the elected officials of the various municipalities within Onslow County and their representatives.
    6. f.        Supports the various committee chairpersons in the exercise of their responsibilities.
    7. g.       Hires, supervises, trains and evaluates staff members, as well as oversees the work of professional consultants.
    8. h.      In conjunction with the Board Chair, develops the agenda for BOD meetings, attends and reports to the BOD at its meetings, maintains accurate minutes of all BOD meetings and distributes information to board members as required.
    9. i.         Prepares a variety of reports as required.

Works with the BOD to ensure that the technology employed by the MOTM in communicating with various audiences and demographic groups is contemporary, innovative/fresh, inspirational and relevant

Requirements

NECESSARY SKILLS AND EXPERTISE

  1. 1.       Experience with non-profit management.
  2. 2.       Experience with organizational finance and management.
  3. 3.       Experience with analyzing information, exercising sound judgement and arriving at valid conclusions.
  4. 4.       Experience with devising and implementing long range plans.
  5. 5.       Experience with issues confronting non-profit organizations, donors, public agencies and community organizations.
  6. 6.       Experience in working closely, collaboratively, and effectively with a board of directors and its executive committee and officers.
  7. 7.       Experience in working effectively with public and private sector individuals, officials and organizations.
  8. 8.       Experience with budget preparation.
  9. 9.       Demonstrated polished written and oral communication skills, particularly public speaking.

MANAGEMENT EXPERIENCE

  1. 1.       Experience with developing long-term plans and programs and with evaluating their accomplishment.
  2. 2.       Experience with analyzing facts, exercising sound judgement and arriving at valid conclusions.
  3. 3.       Experience with communicating ideas clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
  4. 4.       Experience in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with diverse individuals and organizations.

PUBLIC RELATIONS EXPERIENCE

The ideal candidate must have proven success with media relations and issues management.

MARKETING EXPERIENCE

The ideal candidate must be able to articulate, portray and sell the vision of the MOTM.

PERSONAL QUALITIES

The ideal candidate should possess the following characteristics:

  1. 1.       Unimpeachable ethical standards.
  2. 2.       Personal selling skills:  a winning personality and impressive written and oral communication skills.
  3. 3.       Skill in managing and inspiring people and performance.
  4. 4.       Skill in leading and directing diverse individuals and groups.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE

Preferred.  A Master’s Degree in one of the following or closely related fields:  museum studies, finance, history, business administration, education or public administration.

The ideal candidate should have at least ten years’ experience in a progression of managerial positions. A demonstrated track record of successful fundraising is particularly important. The candidate will have previously served as the executive director of a small-to-medium sized non-profit organization, preferably in the field of arts and culture, and will demonstrate the understanding and passion needed to advance the mission of the MOTM.
