POSITION SUMMARY

The Bay Area Discovery Museum (BADM) and its Center for Childhood Creativity (CCC) seek an entrepreneurial, forward looking, collaborative education leader to spearhead a new initiative to bring creativity development to all children through high-quality, research-backed informal educational experiences. Reporting to the VP of Education/CCC Director and serving on the Museum’s Senior Leadership and Educational Leadership Teams, this full-time, exempt role will be responsible for building robust partnerships with out-of-school time (OST) educational providers (e.g. libraries, museums, afterschool and summer learning organizations), leveraging the CCC’s research base and the Museum’s twenty-five years of exemplary work in OST early learning.

The Associate Director of Informal Education and Partnerships will oversee the Museum’s direct service work in the Bay Area region, delivering high-quality creativity and STEM outreach programming to children through OST partners and with a particular focus on serving under-resourced communities. In addition, he/she will serve as an advisory consultant on staff of the CCC, working with clients throughout California and across the nation whose services and products contribute to the creative development of children. Current statewide and national partners include the California Library Association, the Association for Science and Technology Centers, and the Association for Library Services to Children.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategy and leadership

  • With the VP of Education/CCC Director, establish long and short term vision for outreach partnerships, identifying strategies, metrics, and tactics for working with regional, state and national OST educators.
  • Building off the Museum’s strategic plan and current pilot projects, evolve strategy for outreach work, determining appropriate balance between direct and indirect service. (In early months, for instance, finalize structure/ approach of school readiness program.)
  • Serve on Museum’s Senior Leadership Team to align outreach strategy with broader institutional vision of impacting one million children annually and to represent needs of outreach team with Museum leaders.
  • Serve on Museum’s Education Leadership Team to build cohesion among core initiatives (i.e. CCC research, onsite visitor experience and programming, onsite licensed preschool, school-based partnerships, and OST partnerships) and to collaborate on department-level capacity building and professional development.
  • Partner with External Relations teams (development, marketing, and communications) to support strategies for fundraising, audience acquisition, and thought leadership.
  • Work with CFO and VP of Education to develop and oversee budget aligned to strategy and goals.

Direct Service Work

  • Establish achievable yet ambitious business plan for direct service programs in the community, articulating appropriate balance between revenue-generation and charitably-funded direct service to low-income communities.
  • Work with the Associate Director of STEM Education and Partnerships to collaborate, cross-pollinate, and build cohesion between in-school and OST programs (e.g. Engineering Mobile Lab, STEM Idea Labs).
  • Oversee curriculum development for OST initiatives to ensure all programs represent CCC research and Museum best practice (e.g. developmentally-appropriate, learning-rich, and aligned to creativity and/or STEM outcomes).
  • Deliver programs to children through OST partners, particularly during pilot phases and program build-out.
  • Oversee, manage, and coach staff who provide direct service programs through OST partners to ensure consistent high-quality.

Advisory/Client Services

  • Serve as client lead for projects related to OST learning and manage relationships with libraries, museums, afterschool and summer programs, etc.
  • Using CCC research base, develop curricular products for clients (e.g. school readiness, creativity, family engagement) that have broad impact and/or revenue-generating potential.
  • Provide consulting services (e.g. curriculum development, technical assistance/ coaching, program evaluation, product evaluation) to partners/ clients.
  • Identify prospective clients and steward new relationships; maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all relationships in Altru database.
  • Track consulting services and work with Finance to ensure timely and accurate invoicing.

Thought Leadership

  • Contribute to broad CCC thought leadership strategy through blog posts, articles, speaking opportunities and social media engagement.
  • Keep abreast of current trends in OST learning.
  • Build a strong network of education leaders in OST learning communities.
Requirements
  • Master’s Degree or equivalent experience in Education, Child Development, Museum Sciences, Library Sciences and/or Business.
  • Understanding of, respect for, and investment in creativity (defined broadly as the openness, flexibility and persistence to solve problems in innovative ways), science learning/ research, and equity.
  • Ten or more years of experience working in education, with at least five years spent working directly with preschool or elementary aged children in a school or OST educational setting.
  • Expertise and passion for designing and delivering hands-on, learning-rich curricular activities (e.g. making and tinkering, hands-on science) for young children.
  • A proven track-record of developing, overseeing, and evaluating programs.
  • Previous success as a manager and inspiring leader.
  • Direct service experience and proven cultural competency with under-served and low-income communities.
  • Tolerance of ambiguity, change, risk, rapid iteration and a fast-paced work environment; ability to manage pressure with sense of humor, perspective and strong prioritization, and positivity.
  • Exemplary communication and client relationship skills; comfort with networking and presenting.
  • Skills in both creative idea generation and tactical execution.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • General comfort with technology; high proficiency with full Microsoft Suite; ability to learn new platforms quickly.
  • Willingness and ability to travel nationally for conferences, networking opportunities, and speaking engagements.
