Description

The Whitney Museum of American Art is seeking a full-time editor to join its publications department. Reporting to the director of publications, the editor will be responsible for printed and digital exhibition catalogues, books, and essays as well as exhibition graphics and some exhibition-related ephemera.

Responsibilities

–          Manage and edit approximately three exhibition catalogues per year (from manuscript to bound book)

–          Edit exhibition graphics for approximately six exhibitions per year

–          Edit brochure essays

–          Edit exhibition-related ephemera

–          Hire, contract, and manage freelancers

–          Perform research

–          Liaise with production managers

–          Assist other editors as needed

–          Create sales materials for the Whitney’s trade publishing partner

Requirements

Requirements

–          B.A. in English or Art History

–          Minimum of seven years of experience managing and editing illustrated scholarly publications

–          Understanding of modern and contemporary American art

–          Knowledge of general museum style and the Chicago Manual of Style

–          Adept at proofreading, fact-checking, and rewriting

–          Meticulous attention to detail

–          Ability to work well under deadline pressure

–          Diplomacy, collegiality, and excellent communication skills

–          Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Adobe programs.

–          Familiarity with TMS (The Museum System) preferred

–          Foreign language a plus
