Youth Education Instructor

Description:

Berkshire Botanical Garden is seeking an educator for this summer’s Farm and Garden Program at the Berkshire Hills Regional School District. The Farm and Garden Program strengthens students’ connection to their local food system through hands-on activities related to farming and gardening. Students in the program will be actively maintaining a garden at the schools; learning to cook with food harvested from their garden and other local farmers; meeting local farmers and food advocates; and taking part in a student-run service learning project.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Engage and guide 5th and 6th grade students through farm and garden-based service learning projects.
  • Prepare and maintain materials and supplies needed for each day’s lesson.
  • Maintain a good relationship with other teachers, organizations, and administrators at the school.
  • Communicate behavior or medical issues to the directors at school and BBG.
  • Identify and meet all student needs to the best of your ability, and serve as a role model for the program’s students.
  • The Educator will report to the Youth Education Coordinator.
  • Assist with other activities as needed.

The position runs for six weeks: a mandatory week of training and five weeks of programming. The position begins on Monday, June 27, 2016 and ends on Wednesday, August 3, 2016.

Qualifications:

  • Previous experience working with children required.
  • Must be highly responsible, self-motivated, flexible, and capable of working outside all day
  • An abundance of patience for working with children as well as a good sense of humor and strong work ethic.
  • Be able to successfully pass a CORI and SORI background check
  • Physically able to work outside all day and lift and move up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older and have graduated high school by start of the program.
  • Experience with crafts, gardening, and farming experience preferred.
  • Experience facilitating youth in team building and service-learning projects preferred.
