Description

The Virginia Department of Veterans Services is seeking a highly qualified professional and exemplary leader to serve as the Director of the Virginia War Memorial, the Commonwealth of Virginia’s monument to honor the memory of Virginia’s men and women who demonstrated a willingness to serve and fight to defend our way of life from World War II to the present.

The Director leads a five-member multi-disciplined team (increasing to 10 by 2018) with expertise in secondary education, volunteer management, media relations, and museum-level exhibit preparation and artifact preservation/storage; supervises over 100 volunteers; coordinates the work of an advisory board consisting of citizen members appointed by the Governor and members of the Virginia General Assembly; and works daily with a non-profit foundation that raises funds to support the Memorial’s education mission and an advisory council of veterans and distinguished citizens.

The Director oversees approximately 50 patriotic and educational programs per year that attract audiences ranging from 10 to 1,000+ individuals, plans and coordinates museum-quality exhibits and educational displays, and directs the preparation of educational material including documentary videos, lectures, student seminars, and films.

The Director attends major veterans organization conferences and conventions statewide; speaks at numerous statewide functions; travels extensively across the state for meetings, conferences, conventions, and speaking engagements; and performs various duties during evening hours, weekends, and holidays.

The Director oversees all capital construction projects, including new construction and the maintenance/repair of existing structures. The Memorial is in the midst of a new construction project, expected to be completed in late 2017, that will add 20,000 square feet of program space and an underground parking garage.

Requirements

Demonstrated experience in managing a facility or program of the size or complexity of the Virginia War Memorial ($1M+ annual operating budget, leadership of a multi-disciplined team, work with volunteers and boards, and supervision of building construction and maintenance projects).

Demonstrated knowledge of the structure, customs, and history of the United States Armed Forces from World War II to the present; and of issues of importance and affecting Virginia veterans.

Demonstrated experience in communicating to variety of audiences, with an emphasis on strong public speaking skills.

Ability to work with veterans, citizens, citizen boards and public officials at all levels; experience managing multiple priorities and events. Must have and maintain a valid Virginia driver’s license.

College or advanced degree in Museum Studies, or any college or advanced degree in business, management, education, history, or public administration, or any combination of education and job experience that demonstrates the aforementioned knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Veteran of the United States armed forces is preferred.
