POSITION SUMMARY

The Bay Area Discovery Museum (BADM) and its Center for Childhood Creativity (CCC) seek an experienced, driven, collaborative educator to serve as Teacher-in-Residence to lead curriculum development and programming for the Museum’s new Mobile Engineering Lab (M.E.L.) for the academic year 2016-17.  With the goal of increasing awareness of and access to engineering for elementary school students, their families and teachers in the Bay Area and throughout California, the Teacher-in-Residence will lead the Mobile Engineering Lab’s direct service work, delivering programming to children through school and community based partners with a particular focus on serving under-resourced communities. Reporting to the Associate Director of STEM Education and Partnerships and serving on the School Programs Team, this full-time, exempt, one-year role will be primarily responsible for crafting and delivering innovative, interdisciplinary, research based, hands-on engineering experiences of the highest quality.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategy and Leadership

  • With the Associate Director of STEM Education and Partnerships and the Manager of Programs for Schools and Teachers, contribute to the Museum’s vision for school based partnerships via the Mobile Engineering Lab, identifying strategies, metrics, and tactics for working with school partners.
  • Partner with External Relations teams (development, marketing, and communications) as needed to support fundraising and audience acquisition efforts.
  • Serve on the Mobile Engineering Lab Task Force as a direct service and curriculum design lead representative.

Direct Service Work

  • Write curriculum for Mobile Engineering Lab initiatives and ensure all programming represents CCC research and Museum best practice (e.g. developmentally-appropriate, content-rich, and aligned to creativity and STEM outcomes).
  • Deliver programs to students and teachers in schools throughout the greater San Francisco Bay Area and in rural regions of California.
  • With the Manager of Programs for Schools and Teachers, oversee, manage, and coach staff who support direct service programs through the Mobile Engineering Lab to ensure consistent high-quality.
  • Co-lead program evaluation for the Mobile Engineering Lab school-site based curriculum.
  • Support the School Programs team with program development, delivery and evaluation.

Client Services

  • Identify prospective school partnerships and steward new relationships; maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all relationships in Altru database.
  • Track M.E.L. direct service and work with Finance to ensure timely and accurate invoicing.
Requirements
  • BA or BS required, MA preferred; Degree in Education, Early Childhood Education, Child Development or relevant field strongly preferred
  • Multiple Subject Teaching Credential required
  • Minimum of 8 years as a lead classroom teacher required
  • Understanding of, respect for, and investment in creativity (defined broadly as the openness, flexibility and persistence to solve problems in innovative ways), STEM learning/ research, and equity
  • Teaching experience and proven cultural competency with under-served and low-income communities
  • Expertise in and passion for designing and delivering hands-on, content-rich curricular activities (e.g. making and tinkering, hands-on STEM) for young children
  • Tolerance of ambiguity, change, risk, rapid iteration and a fast-paced work environment; ability to manage pressure with sense of humor, perspective and strong prioritization, and positivity
  • A proven track-record of developing, delivering, and evaluating curricula, programs or lessons
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Willingness and ability to travel throughout California to deliver programming
  • General comfort with technology; high proficiency with full Microsoft Suite; ability to learn new platforms quickly
  • LiveScan and criminal record clearance through DOJ Child Abuse Index
  • Must be trained or commit to being trained in First Aid, CPR and AED for adults and children
  • Proof of absence of tuberculosis (TB) required before starting employment
