High Desert Museum – Organization Description

The High Desert Museum is a non-profit organization focused on the biotic and cultural elements of the High Desert region of the Western United States. Located near Bend, Oregon, on the edge of the beautiful Deschutes National Forest, the Museum melds the natural history of diverse habitat types with human history of the environment into a unique blend of indoor and outdoor exhibits, living history and both living and historic collections.

Job Summary – Director of Finance

The Director of Finance is responsible for the accounting operations of the Museum, to include the production of periodic financial reports, maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records, and a comprehensive set of controls and budgets designed to mitigate risk, enhance the accuracy of the company’s reported financial results, and ensure that reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles. The Director of Finance will ensure the integrity and effective management of the Museum’s financial affairs and revenue centers.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or business administration and 5+ years of progressively responsible experience in nonprofit financial management; MBA or CMA/CPA preferred.  Knowledge of fund accounting, endowment management, budgeting, financial reporting systems and financial application software, and project management.
  • Proven ability to manage diverse projects, programs and activities in timely and efficient manner. Ability to coach/develop non-financial managers.
  • Strategic/analytical thinker, collaborative, energetic, creative/resourceful and mission-driven.
Requirements
  1. Develops financial action plans to support the Museum’s strategic imperatives, and programmatic and operational goals;
  2. With the Executive Director,  attends the Board of Trustees Finance Committee meetings; participates in the oversight of investment advisors and portfolio managers to ensure compliance with the Museum’s Endowment Policy and prepares the quarterly Endowment Report;
  3. Manages the annual budget planning process and internal financial reporting, and prepares monthly/quarterly reports  or other reports as requested and/or required by the Board of Trustees or its Finance Committee;
  4. Guides risk management decisions, evaluates and manages insurance coverage for protection against property loss and potential liabilities, and responsible stewardship of the Museum’s campus, forest, facilities, and equipment;
  5. Serves as principal Museum liaison to banks, external auditors, and other professional service providers;
  6. Monitors bank deposit, checking and credit line accounts; prepares annual wage & benefit budget worksheets; manages accounting, payroll and budgeting systems; tracks and prepares financials for grant reporting; manages project management and coordinates annual audit and preparation of the Form 990;
  7. Implements AAM (American Alliance of Museums) standards and best practices;
  8. Oversees operations including retail centers, Admissions, and Information Technology.
  9. Performs other duties and tasks as assigned, such as IT liaison.
