  • Reporting directly to the Nancy and Steve Crown Family Chief Curator, this key curatorial position reflects the expanded role of the collection in the overall artistic direction of the Whitney Museum.  A successful candidate should demonstrate a record of leadership and vision in the museum field.
  • The Senior Curator, Permanent Collection, will supervise the growth, display, preservation, interpretation, and scholarship of the museum’s collection of more than 22,000 objects.  The Curator will be responsible for the conceptualization of and planning for collection displays and traveling exhibitions; acquisitions across media; publications; loans; deaccessioning; didactic texts; growth of the online collection; presentations and reports; administrative matters; and budget management.  The Curator will play a primary role in long-term planning for the collection as it relates to the mission and larger strategic goals of the institution.
  • The incumbent will work closely with other curatorial staff and departments in the museum, in particular Conservation, Education, Exhibitions and Collections Management, Publications, Advancement, and Research Resources. In addition, he/she will cultivate external relationships with artists; trustees and various patron groups; members of the press; and colleagues at other institutions.  The Curator will supervise an assistant curator; a curatorial assistant; and, jointly, the Sondra Gilman Study Center Fellow.

 

Requirements
  • Job Requirements include:  an M.A. in art history; Ph.D. preferred; 10+ years of experience, including extensive scholarship in the field of modern and contemporary art in the United States and a track record of exhibitions, publications, and substantial collection responsibilities.
