The Royal British Columbia Museum is one of Canada’s great cultural treasures. Our collections, research and public programmes enable us to tell the stories of BC in ways that enlighten, stimulate and inspire.

The Knowledge Department is the intellectual hub of the Royal BC Museum.  It deepens public understanding of the human and natural history of the province through the responsible stewardship, strategic development, scientific analysis and visitor-focused interpretation of the museum’s extensive collections.  It achieves this through its outstanding team of curators, each of whom works collaboratively with colleagues, the public, academic institutions, ministries and other stakeholders to produce exceptional collections-based research that is not only relevant to the province and beyond, but also capable of communication across a wide range of media.

Reporting to the Vice President, Collections Knowledge & Engagement, the Head of Knowledge inspires, promotes, develops and manages a department that not only provides exceptional stewardship of RBCM’s human and natural history collections but also produces scholarly interdisciplinary research that advances understanding of RBCM’s collections and archives, is relevant to contemporary society, and is capable of being presented across a variety of media to a broad audience. With an interest in and commitment to British Columbia, the Head of Knowledge collaborates effectively with colleagues, partners and stakeholders to deepen understanding and widen appreciation of the province through world-class programming, exhibitions and digital media in ways that are as accessible as they are innovative.

With a reputation for original thinking and experience in senior management at a significant research institution (such as a university), cultural organisation (such as a museum, library or archive) or relevant commercial entity (such as a cultural or environmental consultancy) the Head of Knowledge is able not only to devise and implement strategic change that supports the vision and mission of the museum, but also manage the varied operations of a dynamic and diverse department..

The Head of Knowledge ‘makes things happen’ by building consensus amongst colleagues, working collaboratively across departments, partnering with external bodies, and placing our varied audiences at the heart of everything the museum does.  The Head of Knowledge is passionate about the museum’s collections, committed to advancing its collections-based research and adept at championing the museum to a range of audiences.  The Head of Knowledge is passionate about creating an inclusive museum that reflects the rich diversity of British Columbia, and substantively extending the museum’s connections with and relevance to all corners of the province through effective capacity building and sustainable outreach.
