The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) invites applications for the position of Director, George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum (Library). This institution is part of the Presidential Library System, administered by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA).

The Library is housed inside the George W. Bush Presidential Center which is also home to the George W. Bush Institute, a non-partisan, public-policy center. The Bush Institute is operated by the George W. Bush Foundation, along with the 15-acre Native Texas Park, a full-service restaurant, Café 43, and a museum store. The Bush Center is located on the campus of SMU in Dallas, Texas.

The Library preserves and makes available the papers, records, and other historical materials of President George W. Bush. The Library’s holdings include 80 terabytes of electronic information, including over 200 million emails; 70 million paper records including letters, reports, and other documents that chronicle U.S. domestic issues, foreign relations and political affairs during the Presidency. The holdings also include over 43,000 artifacts, more than 4 million photographs, and roughly 60,000 audio video records including digital and analog recordings of news broadcasts, speeches, press briefings, public events, and campaign commercials. Lastly, the Library collection also includes the George W. Bush gubernatorial records, which the Library holds in partnership with the Texas State Library and Archives Commission.

Through the Museum, the President’s life and public service are documented in the permanent exhibit gallery and programs that are designed to stimulate learning, reflection, and a sense of democratic citizenship among the thousands of students, scholars, government officials, journalists, and others who visit the Library annually.

The Library Director plans, directs, and administers all staff, programs and activities of the Bush Library, including archival, conservation, exhibit, public, and educational programs. The incumbent works closely with NARA officials to ensure Library operations are in alignment with the Agency’s strategic goals. The Director maintains close working relationships with the George W. Bush Foundation; Southern Methodist University (SMU), and SMU’s Center for Presidential History; develops cooperative relationships and partnership ventures with other academic and other cultural institutions in support of the Library’s mission and goals; interfaces with the community to raise awareness of the Library; and conducts public relations, marketing, and fundraising activities in support of the Library and Museum.

This position is an excepted service Senior Level (SL) appointment within the Federal Government and serves at the pleasure of the Archivist of the United States. The salary range for the position is $123,175 – $170,400. Relocation expenses may be paid.   • Interest in, and understanding of, events and issues of the 21th Century sufficient to contribute appropriate historical perspective and intellectual leadership to the work of the George W. Bush Library and Museum and its presentation to the public.
  • U.S. citizenship is required for this position.
