We are currently seeking a dynamic and experienced museum or non-profit professional that knows how to collaborate, delegate, lead and empower a team for the role of Director of Marketing and Visitor Relations.  The successful candidate will be visitor focused with a proven track record in managing a broad marketing and communications program.

Job Summary:

The Director of Marketing and Visitor Relations is responsible for designing, implementing and managing comprehensive integrated marketing programs that support NCMA goals, providing strategic leadership, and enhancing NCMA visibility.  The Director also oversees the visitor information and box office staff.

Position Description:

  • Works collaboratively to create and implement marketing and institutional awareness initiatives and to communicate the Museum’s mission and purposes effectively to a broad range of audiences and constituencies.
  • Develops and implements brand marketing, direct marketing initiatives and directs the development of print and electronic materials to support program strategies.
  • Provides knowledge of marketing principles and strategies to enhance and support the institutional strategic plan; develops and implements advertising campaigns; and directs the development of awareness and promotional materials for all programs.
  • Experienced writer who prepares and reviews effective, creative and professional copy for various publications and media, including direct mail, brochures, and advertising.
  • Brings knowledge of digital marketing strategies and their application to art museum environments.
  • Makes data-driven decisions and is responsible for an ongoing program of audience research, data collection, and analytics.
  • Supervises a team of marketing, communications, graphics design, editorial and visitor services staff.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Directing all activities of the Marketing office, supervising the professional duties of marketing, graphics design, and visitor relations (information desk, box office and visitor concierge) employees, and integrating all messaging, marketing plans and activities for the institution.
  • Providing assessment and evaluation of marketing efforts and programs to the Director, Senior Management Team and various boards/foundation officers, as requested.
  • Developing and overseeing market research (including tracking of sales data from revenue sources), data analytics, and other data/research initiatives.
  • Identifying local, regional and national markets of particular significance to the North Carolina Museum of Art.
  • Consistently positioning the NCMA as a respected and exemplary brand across all channels.
  • Driving exhibition, concert and movie ticket sales through strategic and tactical marketing plans.
  • Directing advertising, design and production needs for the Museum including the development and design of print advertising, logo development, collateral design, display, packaging, web-site and merchandise.
  • Overseeing external design assignments of freelancers and production artists.
  • Executing media relations and communications aimed at influencing a broad range of stakeholders, including the general public, board members, directors, government officials, and third parties.
  • Collaborating with the Director of Corporate Development on sourcing, structuring, negotiating and closing non-media partnership agreements.
  • Developing and maintaining all aspects of the Museum website, including but not limited to, daily updates, e-commerce, sponsor integration, and interactive elements.
  • Collaborating with internal and external constituencies in the planning and execution of special NCMA exhibitions and events.
  • Collaborating with staff, various museum volunteers (docents, volunteers, boards) to identify and promote newsworthy activities.
  • Directing budgeting and financial activities of the Marketing and Visitor Relations staff.
  • Participating in NCMA committees as directed.
  • Directing the Crisis Communication Plan development and implementation, as directed by the Museum Director or Chief Deputy Director/CFO.
  • Serving as NCMA liaison, spokesperson, or representative as directed. Attends community meetings for art-related or museum-related partnerships.

Requirements

Minimum Requirements:

  • Completion of a bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, or Journalism is required.
  • An MBA or advanced degree is highly desirable.
  • Management with an art museum or related not-for profit museum or institution is a strong preference.
  • Prior related work experience of at least 10 years is required, preferably with a concentration in marketing and/or overall communications program.
  • Agency experience is a plus
