Position Title: Visitor Services Associate

Position Description: The mission of Brooklyn Navy Yard Center at BLDG 92 is to celebrate the Navy Yard’s past, present, and future and promote the role the Yard and its tenants play as an engine for sustainable urban industrial growth. Through a comprehensive exhibit, public tours, educational programs, archival resources, and workforce development services, BLDG 92 reinforces its unique bonds with the community and inspires future generations to become industrial innovators and entrepreneurs. The BLDG 92 Visitor Services Associate (VSA) welcomes, guides and assists BLDG 92 visitors and provides support on projects to promote programs within the community and to enhance visitor experience. The VSA serves as the public face of the Brooklyn Navy Yard through BLDG 92 and must be customer-service and retail-oriented with strong interpersonal and organizational skills. This position reports to the Visitor Services Manager.

Areas of Responsibility

  • 45% Visitor Services Desk/Customer Service – Manage the hub for all guest interactions including information center, gift shop and ticket sales. Promote memberships and administer visitor surveys. Assist guests, staff, tenants and partners with AV set up, transportation needs and logistics.
  • 30% Tour Docent and Interactive Leader – Lead and assist to develop exhibit and Yard tours for diverse audiences. Facilitate “learning and playing” with exhibit interactives.
  • 10% Programs and Events Support – Represent the organization at on-site and off-site events. Assist with social media content development and on-line promotion. Update programs and events on Visitor Services monitor. Help produce promotional material.
  • 10% Administrative Support – Record and report on collected visitor survey data. Perform light office duties as needed.
  • 5% Resource Guide – Assist guests (and staff) with research using on site resource room and database.

Specific Responsibilities Include:

  • Provides excellent customer service to guests, maintaining current knowledge of products, exhibition, and local points of interest
  • Drives sales for gift shop, tours, memberships, and events
  • Leads tours
  • Performs regular inspection of exhibit interactives and audio/visual equipment. Responds to and reports on system glitches when necessary
  • Accurately operates the computerized POS system and handles payment management including cash and credit cards. Runs nightly financial reports
  • Assists with receiving, unpacking, counting and shelving of all incoming merchandise and performs physical inventory counts throughout the year
  • Maintains appearance of displays and organization of merchandise and brochure racks
  • Completes daily opening/closing procedures
  • Contributes to social media outlets, BLDG 92 blog entries, and on-line calendar listings
  • Responds to research inquiries submitted in person or via e-mail
  • Assists with additional administrative tasks as assigned

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent communication skills, both on the telephone and in-person. Ability to enthusiastically and effectively interface with the public on a daily basis.
  • At least two years customer service experience in hospitality, retail and/or tourism related field.
  • Proficiency in Point of Sale systems as well as in Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Graphic design experience and familiarity with Photoshop and InDesign preferred.
  • Ability to adjust to daily operational needs.
  • Ability to work well independently and as part of a team.

Qualifications: • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent preferred, preferred fields include Museum Studies, Hospitality, or Performing Arts.

Salary: $15/hour
