OVERVIEW

Manages the interpretation team and oversees the process for development and implementation of analog and digital interpretive projects that support visitors’ immediate in-gallery experience, seeking to maximize their effectiveness by implementing best practices and research conducted onsite and in the broader museum fields. Works with curatorial staff, the manager of play-based learning, the editor and the senior media producer to develop interpretive content for the IMA’s exhibitions, permanent collection and interactive spaces. Serves on exhibition core teams with the objective to create exhibitions that cohesively address the museum’s goals for engagement of visitors.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Work with the Director of Interpretation, Media and Evaluation to define and implement the IMA interpretive strategy
  • Oversee the work of the interpretation team which includes a manager of play-based learning, an editor and a senior media producer, as well as interns.
  • Work with curators and other relevant colleagues (manager of play-based learning, editor, senior media producer, photography, etc.) to produce interpretation plans and to develop text-based, images and audiovisual interpretive content for exhibitions and major reinstallations.
  • Oversee the development of analog and digital interpretive projects (e.g. audio guide, iPads, participatory experiences, hands on activities, etc.), including:
    • develop and maintain project budgets
    • develop timelines, identify deliverables, assign tasks and set up meetings
    • communicate with various staff members and contractors involved in the projects
    • review and maintain relevant project documentation including contracts, deliverables, etc.).
  • Serve on the exhibition development process core team whose objective is to formalize the exhibition’s thesis, learning outcomes, content, interpretive plan, and gallery design. Specifically the role of the manger of interpretation in the core team is to advocate for features to support visitors’ needs in the design and layout of the galleries and interpretive materials.
  • Plan and manage budgets
  • Works with Evaluation staff to determine how to implement findings of visitor research conducted at the IMA and in the broader museum field.
  • Research and keep abreast of best practices in art museum interpretation. When possible, disseminate information about IMA interpretation through conference presentations or articles.
  • May supervise staff and/or interns.
Requirements

College degree in art history, art education, museum studies and/or related field. At least 5-7 year experience working in art museums and more specifically in the field of museum education, audience engagement and interpretation. Experience in managing both analog and digital projects. Experience in managing staff.

  • Language– Excellent language and editing skills; ability to communicate effectively with various staff members both verbally and in writing.
  • Math– Ability to maintain simple budgets.
  • Computer – ability to use various Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint, as well as familiarity with project management software (e.g. Basecamp) and with mobile technology (iPads, IPods, iPhones, other touch-screen based devices, etc.).
