The Anchorage Museum is currently recruiting for an experienced, creative, and technically savvy designer to lead its Design Department. The Director of Design is responsible for leading and overseeing design in the museum as it applies to exhibitions, programs and brand. This position works to support institutional excellence in design, design standards and production quality throughout the museum. The Director of Design also develops and builds strong creative and conceptual designs while overseeing the development of graphics and environmental treatments that use sophisticated systems of information design, with a purpose to inform and educate.

Essential Functions:

  • Supervises Design department staff.
  • Works with curatorial, exhibitions and collections teams to design environments and graphics that integrate with content, artifacts and objects, and interactives.
  • Manages institutional graphic design requirements.
  • Works closely with the Deputy Director/Chief Curator and the Director/CEO to ensure excellence in design throughout all facets of the organization, and that application of design standards are consistent.
  • Ensures that design is a key component of Museum programs and exhibitions.
  • Participates in the design and construction/fabrication process for exhibition components that support and illuminate the exhibition goals, content, and design intent.
  • Assists curators to produce presentation drawings and design proposals to teams responsible for developing and approving new exhibitions.
  • Develops and implements exhibition design for temporary exhibitions and collection installations.
  • Participates in design programming and exhibition installation while bringing substantive, innovative design/interpretative ideas to the table early in the exhibition-planning process.
  • Coordinates with project leads, curators, the Director of Exhibitions and other departments on work plans and timetables for designs to ensure timely completion of projects
  • Participates in technical design and the design of multimedia projects (technology design in exhibitions, exhibitions website, interactives and other).
  • Works on graphic design and graphics production in implementation of text panels, label copy, way-finding, and other exhibition components as needed to complement other physical aspects of exhibition design.
  • Fosters collaborative relationships with key stakeholders within and outside the museum.
  •  Assists with redesigning and resizing exhibitions to travel to additional venues.
  •  Supervises departmental staff.
Requirements

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of exhibition development process.
  • Must be technically savvy, with practical knowledge of a variety of design software programs on a Mac platform, such as VectorWorks, Renderworks, SketchUp, Adobe Creative Suite, and Microsoft Office software.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of fabrication materials, techniques and specialties such as casework, mount-making, and safety and conservation practices; knowledge of visitor circulation, pacing, safety, and environmental psychology.
  • Working knowledge of various production processes such as screen printing, large format output, CNC, and knowledge of various substrates.

Skills:

  • Strong design conceptualization.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Strong organizational skills in order to manage a continuous workflow in a high volume, multi-tasking environment.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills and be able to work professionally and collaboratively with colleagues from diverse backgrounds in a team-oriented environment.
  • Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be highly organized, and able to set and carry out short-term goals while keeping long-term goals in mind.

Ability to:

  • Think and design three-dimensionally.
  • Work with a variety of individuals and organizations.
  • Work independently and organize time efficiently to meet deadlines.
  • Handle multiple tasks and projects with changing priorities as required.
  • Keep to strict timelines.

  • Must possess the ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Take initiative to undertake and complete tasks and projects as they arise.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Art, graphic design architecture, or related field.
  • Five years of professional work, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, as an architect or environmental designer with graphic design and production experience in a fast-paced work environment, preferably in a museum, firm, or design studio.
  • Two year’s supervisory experience required.
  • Two years’ experience using design software, (i.e. VectorWorks and/or Sketchup Pro, Adobe Creative Suite), required.  Additional experience with web design preferred.
