We are recruiting for the position of Collections Manager. Reporting to the Director of Research, Collections and Exhibits, the Collections Manager, assigns, administers and supervises the work activities of the Department of Collections and Conservation, assisting the Museum to fulfill its mission of preserving the Museum’s collection of over 2.8 million artifacts and specimens. The incumbent participates in the recruitment of staff and volunteers, and oversees the development of personnel within the Department. In addition to his or her management responsibilities, the incumbent participates in the hands-on execution of collections and conservation work, as appropriate, and serves as the departmental representative in communicating with staff, outside organizations, and the public regarding collections care and conservation topics, as part of the Museum’s broader internal and outreach activities.

The successful candidate will have a University degree (Masters preferred) in an appropriate discipline, with specialized training specific to both collections management and conservation, and at least five years experience in collections management and/or conservation in a medium-to-large size museum setting. The successful candidate will also preferably have at least two (2) years of managerial experience in a mediumto-large size museum that oversees diverse human and natural history collections including a significant quantity of archaeological material. A demonstrated ability to plan, coordinate, and supervise the overall day-to-day operations of a multi-disciplinary department is essential to success in this role. JOB DESCRIPTION: Pay Group 9
1. General The Manager, Collections and Conservation reports to the Director of Research, Collections and Exhibits and is responsible for managing the Department of Collections and Conservation. The incumbent oversees and prioritizes the work activities of a team of collection and conservation professionals, aligning their efforts to the institution’s goals and objectives.

2. Key Accountabilities & Typical Duties
A. Priority 1: Management
To plan, coordinate, monitor and record the work done by staff in the Department of Collections and Conservation, assisting the Museum to fulfill its mission by focusing on its core competency to develop and preserve the Museum’s collection of over 2.8 million artifacts and specimens, together with a large image collection.

i. Manages the day-to-day operation of the Department of Collections and Conservation and all related delivery of services (e.g. fee-for-service) to staff, volunteers, external agencies and the general public.
ii. Oversees the implementation of all Museum policies, procedures and guidelines pertaining to the collection; the organization and storage of all related documentation; and full conversion to electronic data keeping.
iii. Strategically plans, coordinates, supervises and participates in the implementation of departmental short- and long-term work plans, goals and objectives.
iv. Chairs monthly departmental and Collection Committee meetings.
v. Manages the annual operating budgets for Collections and Conservation and the Library, including purchase orders and the monitoring of expenditures.
vi. Seeks additional funding sources, prepares approved grant proposals and applications, and manages special projects which support departmental needs.
vii. Other Museum-related duties as reasonably assigned by management.

B. Priority 2: Supervision and Mentorship
To assist the Divisions of Research, Collections and Exhibits and Human Resources in the recruitment of staff and volunteers, and to oversee the development of personnel in the Department of Collections and Conservation.

i. Participates in the hiring, as well as manages the training, supervision and evaluation, of contract staff and volunteers (including interns and summer students) assigned to work in the Department of Collections and Conservation.

C. Priority 3: Communication
To advance understanding of the Museum’s core activities by communicating with staff, outside organizations, and the general public regarding collections care and conservation of the Museum’s collection.

i. Shares collections and conservation knowledge through the Museum’s website, programs, publications, conferences, etc.
ii. Provides collections and conservation expertise in response to public inquiries;
iii. Acts as a spokesperson for the Department of Collections and Conservation in response to media requests, as requested by management.
iv. Actively maintains a vibrant departmental online presence via the Museum’s website and STAR/Web interface, including oversight of the departmental blog, collections database, and all methods of communication that foster increased public access to the Museum’s collections.
v. Participates in outreach initiatives (e.g., presentations, tours, conference papers) and publishes on relevant topics.
vi. Provides consultation and liaison services for various institutions and agencies, generally and as authorized under fee-for-service agreements.

D. Priority 4: Collections Care, Handling and Conservation
To assist the completion of department goals and objectives by participating in hands-on collections and conservation work.

i. Manages the implementation of short- and long-term strategies regarding the collection’s inventory, use, maintenance, storage, environmental controls, and disaster preparedness.
ii. Participates in hands-on collection and conservation activities as required.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Skills, Abilities and Knowledge

i. Current and comprehensive knowledge of collections management, conservation and intellectual property theory and practice across multiple disciplines, especially applicable to human and natural history museum collections;
ii. Current and comprehensive knowledge of preventive and remedial conservation including: environmental monitoring, pest control, treatment of artifacts/specimens, and documenting conservation actions at all stages;
iii. Demonstrated ability to hire, train, supervise, manage and motivate assigned staff, as well as volunteers;
iv. Demonstrated ability to plan, coordinate and supervise the overall operations of a multidisciplinary department;
v. Excellent communication skills;
vi. Excellent working knowledge and use of computer software, including the MS office suite, collections database systems (e.g. Cuadra STAR/Museums);
vii. Excellent working knowledge of photography, digitization and imaging technologies;
viii. Ability to lift 23 kg (50 lbs) and to negotiate stairs, awkward spaces, and handle heights;
ix. A Manitoba Class 5 driver’s license and RCMP firearms license in good standing are assets.

2. Education, Training and Experience

i. A University degree (Masters preferred) in an appropriate discipline, with specialized training specific to collections management and conservation;
ii. At least five (5) years’ work experience in the area of collections management and conservation in a medium- to large-size museum setting;
iii. At least two (2) years’ supervisory experience preferred, in a medium- to large-size museum that oversees diverse human and natural history collections, including a significant quantity of archaeological material;
