Organization: The mission of the Fire Museum of Maryland is to collect, preserve, display, and interpret historically significant apparatus and related artifacts, memorabilia, and records of the urban fire service in the United States; and to educate the public about the history, people, equipment, and techniques of the fire service and fire prevention and safety.

Position: The Fire Museum seeks an experienced STEM Educator to present programs as part of the museum’s Full STEM Ahead initiative. This position will have a regular schedule for July and August with the opportunity to continue into the fall and beyond.

Responsibilities:

  • Attend training on STEM programming and museum operations.
  • One hour public presentations each Wednesday in July and August as part of Summer STEM Club.
  • Presentation of STEM Labs as they are scheduled for camp/school field trips.
  • Refine museum’s existing STEM Lab, the Electricity Lab.
  • Development of second STEM Lab on Chemistry, creating lesson plan and outline.
  • Reporting attendance numbers and effectiveness of programs presented.

Qualifications:

  • 1 year of experience presenting educational programs in a museum or other nonclassroom setting, STEM programs preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree, science, teaching, or related field preferred.
  • Experience developing and presenting programs to diverse audiences.
  • Experience working with children.

Compensation: This is a temporary, grant-funded position. A $1,000 stipend will be distributed to the employee in three parts during July and August if all expectations are met. In the fall, the right candidate may be able to transition to an hourly rate to continue presenting programs to school groups and for the 2nd annual Maryland STEM Festival in November.
