Description

The Kimbell Art Museum seeks a curator, associate curator, or assistant curator of European Art, to be responsible for aspects of painting and sculpture before 1800.  The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated record of scholarship and connoisseurship in one or more fields of European art, preferably directly related to the strengths of the museum’s small, but renowned permanent collection.  The curator will be responsible for researching, documenting, and publishing that collection and will participate in the process of acquisition.  He or she will also conceive, organize, and coordinate special exhibitions of international scope and curatorial distinction.

The position requires previous experience in museum work, in a capacity that would equip the candidate to work independently with skill and confidence.  Scholarly achievement should be demonstrated; Ph.D.—completed or in progress—is strongly preferred. Fluency in one or more foreign languages is desirable.  Mastery of the history and bibliography of the field should be accompanied by a passion for works of art in and of themselves: the candidate should value connoisseurship and should appreciate the materials of works of art, their physical history, and their conservation.

Within a small group of curators, the chosen candidate will be willing to take on multiple—sometimes unforeseen—responsibilities with enthusiasm.  He or she will demonstrate a talent for communication and or collaboration; will possess excellent writing skills; will be gifted at public speaking; and be committed to education.  The candidate will show a warm, wholeheartedly cooperative outlook towards fellow staff members and towards all the museum’s audiences—from trustees and dedicated collector-donors to the most casual visitors.

Salary commensurate with experience.

Three professional references should be submitted with your resume.
