The Assistant Director for Fundraising Systems Development is a hands-on leader for the programming, systems analysis and production support function in the Office of Advancement for the Smithsonian Institution, leveraging the recently implemented Pan-Institutional Database for Advancement (PANDA) to provide reporting and information to drive and inform Smithsonian Advancement. The Assistant Director uses systems analysis and programming concepts and a comprehensive knowledge of the fundraising business function to resolve highly complex operational issues and meet the philanthropic objectives of the Smithsonian. This is an exceptional opportunity for an energetic professional with demonstrated success analyzing user requirements, and writing and developing reports, extracts and utilities in PL/SQL, SQL and Cognos. This team leader will add value by:

  • Identifying and implementing opportunities to use technology to improve the user experience
  • Managing the delivery of multiple complex simultaneous system development projects from design through to release
  • Contributing to the technical solution from design through code level
  • Training, coaching and supervising the development team and ensuring that team meets the needs of the business users

This work is completed using systems development life cycle methodology.

Requirements

Qualified candidates will have:

  • Strong working knowledge of SQL, PL/SQL, stored procedures, indexes, triggers and other advanced features. Ability to write complex queries and optimize their performance.
  • Experience with large and complex databases – preferably fundraising, membership or sales databases – and specific technologies and best practices in data integration, query design, data validation/automation, analytic functions, electronic data warehouses, ETL (extract, transform, load) and relational database structure
  • Knowledge and experience with business intelligence tools such as Cognos, Tableau, QlikView and their open source equivalents, sufficient to build tables, custom views, scripts, fields and formulas, and experience with Microsoft Office
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to train, mentor, direct, and validate the work of team members, previous experience as a technical team leader preferred.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, presentation skills, and the ability to build relationships and inspire others
  • Curious, creative and collaborative approach to challenges

Ten years of experience, demonstrating increasing responsibility and technical acumen is required. Experience with the Ellucian Advance system and the fundraising business function are preferred.

The Office of Advancement oversees and guides the fundraising efforts of the entire Smithsonian and is home to the central advancement organization for the Institution. In addition to raising significant support for a variety of Smithsonian initiatives, the Office of Advancement provides support services to advancement offices across the Institution. The office engages with staff throughout the Smithsonian in accomplishing their goals.
