Responsible for the care and interpretation of the collections associated with the Car and Carriage Museum (CCM)

Reports to: Director of Curatorial Affairs (DCA)

Hours:   Primarily, Monday ‐ Friday, evening and weekend work as needed

Full‐time, non‐exempt with benefits

Responsibilities:

  • Manage the collection of automobiles, carriages and accessories associated with the CCM
  • Supervise daily care of the CCM by monitoring temperature, humidity, galleries, and collection storage area
  • With curatorial and education colleagues, develop short and long‐range plans for installation and interpretation at the Car and Carriage Museum
  • Suggest themes and concepts for exhibitions and installations and potential supporting artifacts and loans
  • Supervise periodic installation changes—typically 2 per year, often in conjunction with, or related to, thematic tours, art museum exhibitions, or other programs.
  • Recommend and oversees conservation projects related to the Car and Carriage Museum.
  • Develop and implement a cleaning and maintenance schedule for vehicles based on best museum practice and use of conservationally appropriate products and methods.
  • Provide documentation of vehicle use, maintenance, and repair to the Collections Registrar for permanent record in the object file
  • Identify, classify, catalogue, and research collection as necessary
  • Provide occasional talks, tours, or presentations to the general public, media, funders, and members as requested
  • Provide input into security procedures and risk management related to the Car and Carriage Museum
  • Other duties as requested by management

Qualifications:

  • BA in History, American History, History of Technology, or related field with a minimum of 3 years museum experience
  • Knowledge of the history of transportation, general social history, and material culture in America necessary, with emphasis on the years 1850‐1920, desirable
  • Masters Degree in Museum Studies, History, or related field, desirable Frick Art & Historical Center, Inc. 2016
  • Excellent research, writing, and editing skills with ability to write in various formats for various audiences
  • Strong project management skills
  • Ability to handle a variety of responsibilities simultaneously
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively deal with staff and general public
  • Windows computer experience including Microsoft Office software required
  • Clearance of a criminal background check
  • Act 33/34 clearances
  • Driver’s license
  • Ability to lift 25 lbs
