The LSU Foundation, in conjunction with the LSU Museum of Art, is seeking a Director of Development with the creativity, vision, and talent for increasing marketing and philanthropic giving outcomes. This position reports directly to the Executive Director of the LSU Museum of Art and works in conjunction with the LSU Foundation’s Associate Vice President of Development within the strategic development environment of the LSU Foundation. As a member of the leadership team comprised of the Executive Director, Curator, Educator, and Assistant Director for Collections, the successful director should expect and possess the ability to work in a collaborative and team focused environment.

The mission of the LSU Museum of Art is to “enrich and inspire through collections, exhibitions, conservation and education, serving as a cultural and intellectual resource for the University, Baton Rouge, and beyond.” Established in 1962, the Museum comprises 15,000 square feet distributed among fourteen galleries. With ceilings over 15 feet tall, the contemporary gallery space can comfortably accommodate works of art in a wide range of media. In addition to holding one of the largest university affiliated art collections in the South, the Museum presents touring exhibitions of regional, American, and European painting, sculpture, decorative arts, works on paper, and photography. The ideal candidate will:

  • Manage the overall strategic vision of the development function and contribute to the leadership team’s strategic planning efforts.
  • Develop strategies to increase fundraising from individuals through memberships, events, annual and major gifts.
  • Working in collaboration with appropriate staff, analyze and research grant making opportunities, evaluate them for funding potential, develop a detailed annual calendar with grant deadlines and activities, and write and submit proposals in collaboration with the Curator, Educator, and Executive Director.
  • Work closely with the Executive Director to establish development and fundraising budget goals and ensure financial goals are being met on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis, as well as soliciting major donors, exhibitions, and educational program sponsors.
  • Utilize the ADVANCE donor database effectively to document progress with donors, keeping the Executive Director abreast of said progress.
  • Coordinate with central Gift Planning staff to increase major and deferred gift planning opportunities.
  • Provide strategic direction and work in coordination with membership coordinator in order to increase membership and facilitate moves management for increased membership revenues.
  • In coordination with the Coordinator of Events and Marketing of Facility Rentals, works on high ROI fundraising and membership events that have been approved by the Executive Director, including but not limited to the Museum’s annual fundraiser.
  • In coordination with the Communication Coordinator, develops marketing materials and other collaterals that communicate a consistent and positive identity and messaging for the museum and its events.
  • Prepare development reports to the Museum’s Advisory Board and other Boards and committees as needed
  • Serves as staff liaison for Development Committee
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university
  • A minimum of three years of broad grant writing and fundraising experience
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including some nights and weekends

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree
  • Experience working in a museum or other cultural organization

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Demonstrable successful track record of setting and reaching ambitious fundraising goals
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent computer skills, including extensive knowledge of fundraising software
  • Strong time-management skills; must be able to work efficiently on several projects simultaneously and prioritize deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and with staff demonstrating sound judgment, and has strong attention to detail
  • Ability to plan and manage activities strategically and communicate those thoughts and plans as part of the staff team to coworkers and supporters

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The LSU Foundation wishes to fill this position quickly, but finding the right candidate is more important than the timeline. Therefore, the position will be open until filled.
