The new American Writers Museum [AWM] will open in Spring, 2017 at a 12,000 square foot facility on North Michigan Avenue in Chicago. The AWM will celebrate American writers and explore their influence on our history, culture, and daily lives. It is the only museum of its kind in the United States.

Position
The AWM is hiring a President to lead the opening of the Museum and its initial years of operation. The President must be a pragmatic leader as well as a creative thinker:  able to create new opportunities to introduce audiences to American writing by maximizing the local and national impact of the American Writers Museum. Reporting to the Board of Trustees, the President will be charged with leading AWM guided by its mission, vision, and community values.
Main Responsibilities
•    Guide the pre-opening and opening events of the Museum;
•    Manage the Museum’s operations and finances and oversee development and long-range planning;
•    Oversee external and community relations, visitor and member engagement, education and programming;
•    Establish AWM’s reputation for delivering exciting educational curricula and programming and  create the organizational structure to sustain and grow that reputation.
Skills and Qualifications
•    Demonstrated skills in all aspects of management;
•    An avid interest in and/or knowledge of American literature and/or related cultural activities;
•    At least five years of senior management experience with increasing levels of responsibility;
•    Experience with direct stewardship of Boards of Trustees/Directors (desired);
•    A Bachelor’s degree is required and an advanced degree desired;
•    Excellent knowledge of and ability in operations, fundraising, marketing, audience development, and branding.
•    Experience of leadership through start-up phases and major expansions is advantageous;
•    Desired career experience at a senior management level of a museum or cultural arts organization, but candidates may also demonstrate an equivalent different background.
