Description:
The Society of Arts and Crafts, a nonprofit organization that has been advocating for contemporary craft since 1897, seeks an ambitious and innovative thinker and doer for the position of Marketing and Communications Manager. This full time position is responsible for the planning and implementation of the Society’s Marketing and Communications strategies to advance key objectives in the five primary segments of the organization: CraftBoston, Exhibitions, Retail, Education, and Development. As the Society relocates to a new, larger location in the Seaport District, the Marketing and Communications Manager will also communicate to the public and press the organization’s vision for its next chapter. This position reports to the Executive Director.

General Responsibilities:The Marketing and Communications Manager will present the Society of Arts and Crafts’ mission and programs in a clear and unified voice. The candidate will serve as a liaison to media while creating and manage social media efforts, e-newsletter, and press releases. S/he will make regular updates to the website and internal communications systems. Candidate will serve as brand manager — policing and maintaining the design standard, voice, and character of the Society. The candidate will hire and manage a dedicated Marketing and Communications Intern as needed to fulfill marketing strategies and goals.

New Home at 100 Pier 4: The Society of Arts and Crafts is in a period of critical change and growth. After 40 years on Newbury Street, we are moving to a new home in the Seaport District at 100 Pier 4, opening in October (offices are currently in the World Trade Center in a temporary space). The Marketing and Communications Manager will herald the Society into this new chapter by creating and implementing a comprehensive marketing strategy, to be developed in collaboration with the Executive Director along with relevant staff and board members. Candidate will leverage and create partnerships with local businesses and organizations in the Seaport to increase the organization’s reach. Along with the move to a new physical space, the Society is developing an updated website. The Marketing and Communications Manager will oversee and guide the contracted web developer/designer along this process.

CraftBoston Spring & Holiday: These two seasonal shows unite hundreds of professional artists and craftsmen with thousands of eager patrons under one roof to create a marketplace for handcrafted work in clothing, jewelry, home décor & furniture. The candidate will collaborate with the CraftBoston Director to promote the shows through traditional venues such as print advertising, collateral materials, radio, etc. and identify innovative solutions to market these two weekend-long events. Much of the advertising related to CraftBoston is generously provided through media sponsorships and trades. It is the responsibility of the Marketing & Communications Manager to initiate and develop these relationships. Along with a crew of volunteers, committee members & staff, you will experience CraftBoston, hands on, as a key member of the team.

Exhibition: Our gallery presents four curated exhibitions per year and organizes related educational programs. The chosen candidate will provide marketing support, producing collateral material and signage as needed and will help promote the exhibitions and receptions through various outlets.

Retail: Our retail gallery represents hundreds of makers throughout the USA. The Marketing and Communications Manager will work directly with the retail team to promote marketing initiatives through traditional and social media, providing creative support as needed.

Education: All of our programs have an educational component. The Marketing and Communications Manager will work with CraftBoston staff, Associate Curator, and Retail Gallery staff to develop and promote educational programs and outreach.

Development: Work to identify and foster relationships with potential sponsors and stakeholders while negotiating contracts and fulfilling sponsorship deliverables.

Compensation & Benefits:A salary, based on experience and expertise, with benefits package will be provided.

Work Schedule:Monday – Friday from 10-6pm. Some nights and weekend hours required.

Qualifications:

Job Qualifications:A Bachelors degree in a related field. 3+ years of progressively responsible experience in marketing, communications, graphic design, and public relations, preferably in a non-profit setting. Solid understanding of branding and its importance; keen visual and design sensibility; ability to work within budget parameters; effective writing and editing skills; proficiency with Microsoft Office products and Adobe Creative Suite; knowledge of HTML & CSS. An appreciation for working with the public, vendors, artists, and sponsors as a member of a small team; passion and commitment to working for an arts organization.
