Essential Job Functions

The Director of Development (DoD) is the second ranking leader and manager of the Development Department. This position reports to the Vice President of Development and works closely with the VP to implement all plans and programs of the Department. DoD assists in providing leadership forfund-raising activities and programs for ZNE including individual gifts, planned giving, corporate and foundation grants and capital campaigns. In addition, under the VP, is responsible for developing and implementing fully-integrated annual and long-term fundraising and sponsorship plans that increase attendance and earned revenue as well as philanthropic support. The Vice President of Development also serves as a member of the ZNE senior management team, which oversees all aspects of the ZNE’s operations.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Under the leadership of the VP of Development, manages the Development department in fully integrated way to ensure fundraising goals are met and capable prospects and members are cultivated into long-term donors.
  • Develops aggressive, yet realistic, annual fundraising plans, including implementation calendars.
  • Leads and manages the Development staff to ensure the effective and efficient operation the Development Department.
  • Exercises creativity to build ever greater support for ZNE, its mission and goals.
  • With VP of Development, develops annual expense budgets and revenue projections for the department (subject to the approval of President & CEO and the Board of Directors).
  • Cultivates a fully engaged Development Committee composed of Board Members, Advisory Council Members and others as may be assigned to this committee of the Board.
  • Cultivates ever greater involvement in development by Board Members and Advisory Council Members whether on the Development Committee, or not.
  • Designs and creates highly effective presentations, solicitations and supporting materials.
  • Under VP, ensures that the department operates within its budget and meets or exceeds revenue projections.
  • Helps create a positive work environment where dedication, respect and integrity are core to the culture.
  • Work in conjunction with ZNE’s Board of Directors, senior management staff and department staff to develop and successfully execute ZNE’s the full spectrum of fundraising plans.
  • Work with consultants, Board, staff and others to successfully grow sponsorship support of ZNE.
  • Work in conjunction with ZNE’s Marketing & Communications staff and consultants to develop and successfully execute initiatives and branding to grow ZNE support.
  • Serve as a representative of the ZNE through public speaking engagements, media interviews, events and networking opportunities.
  • Develops and executes Development events that are cost effective, revenue generating and build new supporters.
  • Ensures preparation and delivery of complete and accurate reports of Development activities.
  • Builds loyalty and commitment in existing donors through appropriate stewardship, communications and recognition programs to minimize donor losses.
  • Focuses on relationship-based giving, as opposed to transactional support.
  • Designs and executes plans and programs to add new donors to ZNE each year.
  • Maintains, cultivates and solicits an appropriately sized portfolio of donors and prospects – Minimum of 100.
  • Represents Zoo New England professionally and ethically at all times.
  • Is a visible and active staff member who civically participates in the community.
  • In the absence of the VP of Development takes full leadership of the Development Department.

Qualifications:
Minimum Job Requirements

  • 5 years of experience in development positions with increasingly responsible roles in fundraising.
  • A proven track-record of building comprehensive, successful fundraising programs.
  • A demonstrated ability to build and lead successful teams by recruiting, managing and developing an effective staff.
  • Proven ability to handle multiple priorities simultaneously in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Strong written verbal and communication skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Strong commitment to the mission of Zoo New England.
