Exhibitions and programs at The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art are designed around a commonly shared belief—that picture books bring great joy to children, while fostering important skills, like critical and creative thinking, early literacy, and art appreciation.
The Literacy Educator reports to and works closely with the Director of Education to develop programs that focus on the art and design of the picture book and support the development of visual and verbal literacy. These programs include drop-in public storytime programs, guided group tours (utilizing Visual Thinking Strategies), and programs for special events. They will relate to exhibitions when possible and will draw upon and promote the Museum’s interactive Whole Book Approach to evaluating and using picture books. This individual is also responsible for presenting visual art and book-centered student outreach programs (including grant-funded and distance learning programs) and professional development workshops promoting visual and verbal literacy, and assisting in curating the Reading Library book collection. Additional responsibilities include coordinating visiting author and illustrator programs, training staff and volunteers in facilitating storytime programs, and researching artists, art, and books related to museum exhibitions to inform program and activity development as needed.

Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in a related field, with a post graduate degree in Library Science, Children’s Literature, or Education preferred. Previous library and/or museum experience preferred, with a strong knowledge and passion for the picture book (experience with the Whole Book Approach a plus). An understanding of educational theories and child development, and ability to engage a multi-generational audience. A track record of exceptional customer service; excellent interpersonal and communication skills including presentational skills and negotiation skills; the ability to work collaboratively with staff and partners; ability to lift 25 lbs at shoulder height and to utilize staircase.
