The Bryan Museum opened in June 2015 in Galveston, Texas, in what was formerly the Galveston Orphans Home, built in 1895. The orphanage survived the Storm of 1900 and remained an orphanage until the 1980s. The Museum is home to the world’s largest collection of over 70,000 artifacts, documents, maps, and works of art relating to the history of the Southwestern United States.

The Bryan Museum seeks a Curator to be responsible for the museum’s significant collection of artwork, documents, and artifacts, including the development, interpretation, exhibition and information dissemination of the collection.

Responsibilities:

– Organize, catalogue, photograph, and oversee the accession of entire collection in the database software

– Research pieces and update item descriptions in museum displays and database

– Research, organize, and write text for rotating museum displays

– Research, issue request, and create paperwork for incoming loans from outside institutions; maintain paperwork for incoming and outgoing loans

– Maintain and organize records relating to collection item purchase invoices, conservation reports, research files, etc.

– Update and create annual insurance schedules of all items in the collection

– Create and update tour information for museum docents, highlighting key pieces in the collection and overall themes of the museum for visitor benefit

– Oversee staff for items to be accessioned in database software, in library/archive, artifact vaults, and for new purchases

– Oversee and advise collection maintenance staff on conservation and maintenance projects, including repairing collection items and art/display installation, as well as maintaining records for temperature and humidity controls throughout the museum

– Conduct occasional tours of the museum building/collection

– Deliver lectures and presentations to various groups at the museum and to the public

– Research auction catalogues for new acquisitions

– Research provenance of items for possible acquisitions

Requirements

Requirements:

  • All candidates must have a minimum of five (5) years museum and curatorial experience.
  • Must have strong research skills (ability to perform scholarly research and provenance research), experience managing others, projects, and budgets.
  • Must have excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills; the ability to work effectively in a leadership position within a collaborative environment; and proven experience in grant writing.
