Archivist [B&O Railroad Museum, Baltimore, MD]

The B&O Railroad Museum seeks an energetic, highly organized, and creative candidate for the position of Archivist. The successful candidate will work closely with the museum’s collections management team and assist with all aspects of the archival/library functions of the Hay T. Watkins Research Library located at the B&O Railroad Museum.

This is a full-time position, with benefits, and reports directly to the Director of Museum Operations.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Archivist is responsible for all aspects of the care of the museum’s archival holdings and operation of the museum’s research room and services. Primary Responsibilities will include: reference services (for researchers, staff, and academic partners); processing archival material (inventory, shelve, and prepare finding aids for archival material); assisting the digitalization of documents, photographs and negatives; photocopying, filing, and data entry in Past Perfect.

The Archivist will assist with the development and installation of interpretive exhibits, and exhibit related programs and publications as directed. The candidate will work to research and promote scholarship on the museum’s archival collection; think rigorously and communicate sensitivity about the conception and reception of museum exhibitions. The position assists with conceptualization, planning and installation of seasonal and permanent exhibits. The candidate will participate in decisions regarding new acquisitions and conservation of archival collection.

The candidate is expected to develop collaborative projects that engage and build audiences, as well as participate in public speaking. The Archivist will assist in the writing of local, state, and national grant proposals to support collections care and exhibitions; and contribute to the writing of materials related to exhibitions and interpretation.

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Graduation form an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in History, Museum Studies, Records Management, Library Science, or other related field is required, Master’s degree is desired. Relative experience may be substituted for educational requirements. Three to five years of professional experience is desired. Candidate must have knowledge of archival research techniques, principles of cataloguing, and knowledge and experience in digital imaging. Additional experience managing an industrial collection is desired as is experience administering a departmental budget and training and managing intern staff, volunteer and docent corps. Excellent knowledge of current archival standards and experience in creation of exhibits are essential.

Must have working knowledge of the principles and practices of office management and tools, work organization and supervision; the ability to supervise, train, motivate and direct interns and volunteers; the ability to interact effectively with all age levels and cultural backgrounds; must have excellent oral, written, computer, problem solving and communication skills. Ability to work independently as well an integral team member is desirable. Successful candidate must be goal directed and results driven. Experience in Microsoft office suite and Past Perfect a plus. Candidate will also be expected to assist Operations Department with large museum events.

Must be able to stoop, bend, reach, crouch, climb ladders and lift up to 40 pounds to retrieve, store, and work with objects.
