The Metropolitan Waterworks Museum is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of Boston’s historic public water system. Based at the iconic Richardsonian Romanesque building opposite the Chestnut Hill Reservoir in the Cleveland Circle neighborhood, the Waterworks houses the three original, 19th century steam engines, as well as related artifacts and archival materials, that pumped millions of gallons of clean drinking water into the city beginning in the 1880s. It is the birthplace of water engineering technology in Boston, and the site of the earliest water quality laboratory in the United States. The Waterworks’ legacy is closely linked to the scientific, architectural, public health, and social development of the Hub.

Our mission: The Metropolitan Waterworks Museum uses its architecturally magnificent building, mammoth steam pumping engines, and the adjacent historic Chestnut Hill Reservoir to interpret unique stories of one of the country’s earliest metropolitan water systems. Through educational programs and exhibits focused on engineering, architecture, urbanism, public health, and social history, the Museum connects these stories to current issues and future challenges.

Position Summary

The Metropolitan Waterworks Museum seeks a creative, enthusiastic, and highly motivated individual to join a close-knit team dedicated to growing the reach of the museum and its engineering and architectural collections. The intern will play a key role in the communications and marketing programs at the museum. S/he will support museum staff in the process of generating digital content and maintaining several social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube, etc.) as part of the Waterworks’ audience development and outreach efforts.

Responsibilities

· Coordinate with Manager of Outreach & Development and Executive Director to pitch, create, post, manage, and analyze social media content related to the Waterworks Museum, including its history, collections, themes, and audiences.

· Assist with preparing, editing, organizing, and scheduling digital medial posts across multiple social platforms and emerging media channels.

· Prepare short-form written content or generate graphic materials (photographs, video, original graphics/infographics) for use in social media assets, blog, website, or in email marketing outreach.

· Monitor and analyze media metrics and prepare short summary reports regarding media reach.

· Contribute to generation of digital and traditional marketing content and outreach campaigns.

· Assist museum staff as necessary and perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
Basic Qualifications

· Recent B.A. or graduate student preferred.

· Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

· Demonstrated fluency with social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube, etc.) and email marketing systems.

· Demonstrated strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to work toward deadlines as part of a small team.

· Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite, Canva or similar, Hootsuite or similar, Constant Contact or similar.

· Willingness to engage with and explore new media opportunities.

· Ability to work independently and interest in supporting a mission-based nonprofit organization.

Salary:
Stipend totaling $1,200 ($10 per hour; max 10 hours per week)
