Position Description: The New-York Historical Society is seeking part-time Educators to lead history programs for students ages Pre-K-College in the museum galleries, including the permanent collections, special exhibitions, and the DiMenna Children’s History Museum. The collections of the New-York Historical Society support programming that covers 400 years of New York and American history. Educator responsibilities include conducting tours and workshops and attending regularly scheduled trainings under the supervision of the Senior Manager for School Programs. The approach to teaching and learning at the Historical Society is object-based inquiry, in which material culture provides a window into the past.

Educators must be available to work between the hours of 9:00 AM and 1:00 PM at least three business days a week for the majority of the school year in order to be considered.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

  • Educators will teach programs about important events and periods in New York and American history in the New-York Historical Society galleries and special exhibitions.
  • Educators are expected to learn all programs by studying the provided program outlines and conduct additional research to ensure the effective delivery of content.
  • Educators will communicate with N-YHS administrative staff to ensure all programs are delivered in a timely fashion and meet expectations.
  • Educators will maintain accurate records of program delivery within personal calendars and Education Division booking system.
  • Prior to teaching, Educators will gather materials to conduct successful programs.• Educators are required to attend regularly-scheduled Education Division trainings to learn institutional pedagogy and content.
  • Educators are required to complete and submit all required paperwork including program evaluations, planning session sheets, and time-sheets.
  • Additional duties as requested that may include but not be limited to leading teacher workshops, parent involvement programs, family programs, special events, etc.

This position will require the employee to lift, bend, stoop, walk, speak and stand for up to 6 hours in a day.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:

  • Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree with a concentration in history, American Studies, and/or art history.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Candidates must have worked in a museum, educational setting, or youth program, with experience in classroom management and establishing a strong rapport with a student audience.
  • Candidates should be familiar with the New York City Department of Education’s Scope and Sequence for Social Studies and the Common Core State Standards for Literacy and History.
  • Bilingual abilities, experience with students with special needs or English Language Learners (ELLs), and/or a background in theater (including familiarity with the Blueprint for Theater Education) is a plus.
