Position Title: Visitor Services Manager, Staten Island Children’s Museum

Position Description: SICM is seeking to hire a Full time Visitor Services Manager to take a lead role in expanding SICM’s Visitor Services as well as develop and implement new forms of outreach and support for SICM visitors. The primary goal is to enhance the visitors’ overall experience through quality customer service, recruit and coach staff, and ensure the smooth implementation of public and weekend programs. The candidate will be an energetic, service-minded, team player who will also manage the adult and student volunteer program and student internship program.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Act in a general oversight capacity of all Visitor Services support staff including receptionists, volunteers, interns and educators (when serving as Manager of the Day).
  • Work closely with multiple departments to help facilitate public and weekend programs.

Reception/Customer Service

  • Ensure hospitality by disseminating information about SICM and site-wide activities to our visitors.
  • Supervise reception desk, set up/closeout daily admissions including financial reconciliation.
  • Coordinate and schedule receptionists, adult volunteers and interns.
  • Coordinate with operations department to ensure museum is clean and safe; Communicate potential or active problems to management; Make suggestions for improved ways of addressing issues.
  • Coordinate with Manager of Public Affairs regarding suggestions to update printed and electronic materials including maps, brochures and signage, etc.
  • Respond to email and phone inquiries.
  • Liaise with Snug Harbor Cultural Center and park rangers as needed; Input site-wide activities into facilities calendar.

Public Programs

  • Act as Manager of Day, overseeing museum operations pertaining to visitor services.
  • Coordinate with Manager of Programs to supervise and model best practices for floor staff and volunteers (observe, coach, evaluate and help train).
  •  Make recommendations for changes in programs and special events designed to increase visitation to the museum and to enhance visitor’s experience while at the museum.
  • Provide assistance in exhibit areas as needed.
  • Conduct daily walk-throughs of all public spaces.
  • Assist with ordering, restocking and maintaining supplies.
  • Keep up-to-date on museum policies and best practices.

Volunteers + Interns

  • Recruit, train, coordinate and support adult volunteers and interns; Assist with High School Internship program.
  • Provide outreach and recruit at community-sponsored events.
  • Administrative duties including monitor data and records for internal, city and other agencies; Provide data and narrative reports as needed to Development office.
  • Provide ongoing communication with staff, volunteers, interns, community organizations and schools about intern and volunteer programs. Assist in additional tasks as assigned by Director of Education.

WORK SCHEDULE: Fulltime WednesdaySunday, some evening hours required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field of study and/or 2 or more years of experience in a managerial capacity.
  • Must be a responsive team worker and have both the interest and experience, especially working with children and families.
  • The ability to diplomatically interact with public.
  • Knowledge of youth development principles and museum education theory; Experience working in a museum a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse audiences, including individuals from different backgrounds, ages and abilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and resolve conflicts between individual or groups of individuals.
  • Ability to work independently; Attention to detail; Initiative and follow-through.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work well as part of a team.
  • Experience in supervising and training staff.
  •  Proficiency in Microsoft Office, databases and Altru.
  • Must have a car and travel to venues for program delivery (mileage and toll reimbursement).

Salary: Salary: low 30’s, excellent benefits (medical, pension, 401K, generous vacation leave).
