The Answer

Normally, glucose metabolism is strictly regulated by liver and pancreatic hormones such as insulin and glucagon. In individuals with type II diabetes, glucose regulation is altered due to the overconsumption of sugar, leading to insulin resistance and abnormally high concentrations of glucose in the blood.

Intermittent fasting, a time-restricted eating regimen, has proven to help increase insulin sensitivity and secretion, thus mitigating the symptoms of type II diabetes. The effects of intermittent fasting are achieved through three main pathways: 1. the Circadian Rhythm and Glucagon Regulation of Cyclic AMP Element-Binding Protein (CREB), 2. Ketone Body Reduction of Oxidative Stress, 3. Glucagon-Mediated Insulin Secretion.

Each of these pathways mentioned above contribute to the effects of intermittent fasting on type II diabetes, and will be discussed further in the chemical pathways page.
