Yorkshire, UK: Poo Power

Yorkshire water, in Yorkshire, uses an anaerobic digestion system to turn their sewage waste into biogas that is burnt for electricity. They are a water utility, but see the interconnection between water and human waste, this interconnection is important and works perfectly with the idea of Just Sustainabilities by working across perceived boundaries and disciplines to create solutions. In addition to actually producing the biogas, a large piece of their work is a major education campaign to tell citizens about what they are doing and why people should care. They “take poo of 100,000 people to generate 51kW of electricity, enough for 500 lightbulbs.”
