Tim Atherton’s Interdisciplinary talk on Visualization at the Science Boot Camp

athertonvisualiztionToday, I talked at the Science Boot Camp 2012 conference—an annual two-and-a-half-day educational event offering librarians from all over the country an opportunity to learn about science—about Visualization. I’m fascinated by the power of visualization for scientists, and as you can see from the rest of our group’s website it’s absolutely key to our work in theoretical physics. Very often, simply figuring out a way to see what our calculations mean actually helps us solve them!

But I was interested in how things worked in other disciplines. I therefore talked to a bunch of friends, including a historian, a museum curator, an artist, an accountant, an education professor and a mathematician, and asked them “How does Visualization inform work in your discipline?” The resulting talk tries to pick up some commonalities and also differences, and hopefully helps identify new strategies for us all to try.
