Letter Writing

Outreach ambassadors write a letter to the students in their classroom about what they were like in the grade that their students were in. Ideally, students should have time to read these, and maybe write response letters to the facilitators outside of class-time. This activity is meant to foster a more personal connection between outreach ambassadors and the students that they teach.  These letters can be passed out at the end of the first engineering outreach class, or can be cut and pasted into engineering notebooks.

Consider these questions when writing: What were you like at the age of your students? What were you worried about? Excited about? How did you feel about school? What did you struggle with? What did you want to be when you grew up? As you got older, how did you change? How did you get to where you are now?

At the end, ask a few specific questions to the students for them to answer/ respond to. Consider writing questions similar to: What do you want to be when you grow up? How have you changed and grown since you’ve been getting older? What’s a fun fact that you can share? Draw a self-portrait in this notebook!”
