The program features two tracks – one for elementary teachers and one for middle/high school teachers – so you are certain to find collaborators who share your reference points. Each track includes two pedagogy courses and two content courses, ensuring thorough preparation with both background and methods.

ENE 0110: ENGINEERING AND SCIENCE FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL EDUCATORS I
This course will provide elementary educators with an introduction to engineering that includes fundamentals of engineering in society, basics of the engineering design process, introduction to programming (sense-think-act), and the integration of simple machines with engineering.

ENE 0111: ENGINEERING AND SCIENCE FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL EDUCATORS II
This follow-on course to EdE 110 will broaden elementary educators experience with the engineering design process, focusing on client-centered design. Topics will include techniques for eliciting design requirements and constraints, approaches to testing prototypes and interpreting results and engineering connections to science topics in circuits and simple machines.

ENE 0130: TEACHING AND LEARNING IN ENGINEERING I
This first course in the pedagogy sequence will develop teachers’ understanding of the value of student thinking and ways to engage with their students’ ideas and design. Additional topics will include how to address issues of access, equity, and social justice in the classroom as well as instructional strategies that support students’ engagement with open-ended engineering design challenges. The course also explores disciplinary definitions of engineering and different engineering disciplines.

ENE 0131: TEACHING AND LEARNING IN ENGINEERING II
The second course in the pedagogy sequence and final course in the certification will work to improve teaching practices by exploring structures for responsive teaching as well as assessment of students’ competencies in engineering. In addition, it will provide foundational knowledge of current policy and research in K-12 engineering education.

ENE 0150: ENGINEERING AND SCIENCE FOR MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL EDUCATORS I
This course will provide educators with understanding of the relationship between science and engineering, and techniques and knowledge that support the formative modeling of design ideas and summative testing of prototypes. Topics will include the following: techniques for analysis of design ideas (vibrations and controls), instrumentation, and computer programming. The course uses a range of equipment (from LEGO to Vernier probes to NI DAQ board) to give educators experience with powerful hands-on tools for their classroom.

ENE 0151: ENGINEERING AND SCIENCE FOR MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL EDUCATORS II
This course will focus on the role of product design, manufacturing and human factors elements of engineering. Topics will include fundamental human factors techniques and theories and tools for prototyping and modeling (CAD, 3-D printing).
