Welcome to the website of the Transport Phenomena Laboratory (TPL) in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Tufts University. Our lab is directed by Professor Marc Hodes and co-directed by Assistant Research Professor Georgios Karamanis and currently consists of 3 full-time PhD students.
TPL’s research is in the broad area of momentum, heat, and mass transfer. Presently, we have two major strands of research. The first is largely experimental and concerns the drying of aerogels. The second is largely theoretical and relates to transport phenomena on superhydrophobic surfaces, a major collaboration with Professors Darren Crowdy and Demetrios Papageorgiou in the Department of Mathematics at Imperial College London through the Red Lotus Project. Our research on the thermal management of electronics resulted in Transport Phenomena Technologies, LLC being spun out of Tufts University by Professors Karamanis and Hodes in 2017.
