Regulatory Support, including IACUCIBC, and Chemical Hazard Registration, is managed by a centralized regulatory support office that works closely with Tufts CMS

The OVPR strives to provide high quality services to faculty and staff and to increase the funding available to support research and scholarship, all the while protecting the University’s interests and ensuring that Tufts is in compliance with all relevant laws and regulations. The office works in collaboration with university leadership, faculty, staff and students to commence strategic initiatives to advance the research and scholarship enterprise at Tufts and ensure our obligations are met. The OVPR is responsible for responsible for pre-award administration of grants and contracts; supporting investigators in developing proposals and funding strategies for their research and scholarship; protection, management, and licensing of the University’s intellectual property; oversight of the use human subjects, animals, biological and chemical hazards, select agents, blood borne pathogens, and radioactive materials and lasers in research, teaching and training; environmental health and safety; implementation of the University’s policies on conflict of interest, export controls and research integrity; and working with other administrative offices to create an environment at the University that encourages and facilitates research and scholarship. The Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) provides oversight for research involving recombinant or synthetic nucleic acid molecules, ensuring compliance with NIH Guidelines, as required for NIH-funded institutions like Tufts University and Tufts Medical Center. The IBC also regulates research involving potentially biohazardous agents to ensure safety and adherence to guidelines from the CDC, OSHA, and local health authorities. Its scope includes the review and approval of work involving recombinant DNA, synthetic nucleic acids, biological toxins, infectious agents, and human or non-human primate materials. This oversight ensures the safety of personnel, the environment, and the community. LEARN MORE

The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) ensures compliance with federal regulations governing laboratory animal care at institutions receiving federal funding. By reviewing and approving research protocols, inspecting facilities, and generating policies, the IACUC upholds the Public Health Service Assurance document, allowing institutions to conduct federally funded research involving animals. Comprised of scientists, veterinarians, non-scientists, and a community representative, the IACUC ensures ethical and humane treatment of animals while serving as a valuable resource for researchers in maintaining high standards of care.
