Sept 18 & 21: Mass. Car-Free Week Kick-Off & Celebration

Tufts Office of Sustainability is celebrating Massachusetts Car-Free Week September 17th-23rd by encouraging students and faculty members to make their commutes car-light!

Endorsing the environmental, financial, community, and health benefits of sustainable travel options, Mass. Car-Free Week promotes public transit, carpooling, bicycling, walking and teleworking as greener modes of transportation.

Track your progress on www.nuride.com, a travel rewards and ride-sharing program sponsored by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation. Win daily prizes for commuting car-free by signing into NuRide from September 17th-23rd!

Tufts Office of Sustainability will guide you through Mass. Car-Free Week with Kick-Off and Celebration events:

Kick-Off: Tuesday, September 18th, 11am – 2pm: Tufts Office of Sustainability (OOS) will host a kick-off event on the lower patio of Mayer Campus Center to promote the environmental and economic benefits of car-light commuting for Mass. Car-Free Week. The OOS will be signing up students and staff for Car-Free Week via NuRide. Come join the local biking and alternative transit community to register your bike, pick up bike maps and flyers, purchase bike locks and other transit merchandise, and learn about everything from folding bikes to car-sharing!

Celebration: Friday, September 21st, 11am – 2pm: There is such thing as a free lunch! Tufts Office of Sustainability will offer a free lunch for all registered participants in Mass. Car-Free Week. Enjoy a meal in the Pearson parking lot (across from Dewick dining hall), where Professor Cathy Stanton’s Anthropology 132 “Myth, Ritual, & Symbol” class  will demonstrate alternative uses for an open parking space. Please RSVP to the lunch either by sharing a picture of your car-light ride on our Twitter (@tuftsOOS) or Facebook, or by sending us an email of your NuRide account progress at tuftsoos@gmail.com.

Sept 8: Somerville Bike Fest

Ride, repair and relish in Somerville’s bicycle culture! SPOKES 2012 will feature free bike maintenance workshops, bicycle goods, info on bike activism/awareness, bike art and more. Come share your love of all things bicycle and all things Somerville!

2:30-5:00pm: “Tasting Tour of Somerville.” The Somerville Bicycle Committee will lead a fundraising ride through the streets of Somerville. Check out the event page to RSVP: http://www.facebook.com/events/448226095198600/.

5:00-7:00pm: Free bike repair works

5:00-5:30: Ace Wheelworks mechanics will offer a general maintenance clinic to teach riders about how to upkeep their own bicycle.

5:30-6:00: Ace will then dive more in depth to cover brake and gear adjustments.

6:00-6:30: Bike Boom will teach you how to fix a pesky flat tire. Never go stranded again!

6:30-7:00: Broadway Bicycle School will demystify the hub and demonstrate hub adjustment tricks and tips, giving insight into how all of the different bearing systems work. They will also cover how to remove a freewheel/cassette.

Ongoing: Tyler from Paramount Bicycle Repair will be offering a wheel building demo. Look for the Paramount tent and come say hi!

7:30-9:00pm: Free “bike-in movie” screening of “PeeWee’s Big Adventure.” Dinner/snacks sold by Lefty’s Silver Food Cart, Culinary Cruisers, TAZA Chococycle, & more. Picnic blankets encouraged. This will happen right in the Union Square Plaza (parking lot in front of The Independent).

9:00pm: S.C.U.L. invites civilian bike craft to come along for a post-event night ride through the city. There will be music.

Bay State Bike Week is coming up! Help Tufts win the Mass Commute Challenge

bay state bike weekThe gloomy weather may not encourage you to go outside today, but have a look at the 10-day forecast, savor that long row of numbers in the 60s, and dust off your bicycle: the 2012 Bay State Bike Week is going on from May 14-20! Presented by MassDOT and MassBike, this “annual celebration of human-powered, two-wheeled transportation” is full of local eventsfrom organized rides, film screenings, scavenger hunts, etc., making Massachusetts the only state in the nation with a truly statewide bike week.

You can also register and help Tufts win the MassCommute Bicycle Challenge, a competition open to anyone who lives, works or attends school in Massachusetts. Simply pledge to bike for all or part of Bay State Bike Week and let’s get Tufts on theleaderboard this year. Look at the real-time stats to see how we’re doing against our competitors. MIT is leading now and we’re 5th. Come on, register now! Prizes will be raffled off at the Bike Bash wrap up party.

June-August 2012: Common Circle Cross Country Bicycle Tour

Who: You and your neighbors who care about a sustainable future for America.  As always, all of our programs are designed for beginner and intermediate cyclists.

Where: Eugene, Oregon to Washington, DC

When:  June 1 – August 31, 2012

Come ride your bicycle with us across the country learning about and promoting sustainability and permaculture. Our most powerful program yet – a supported cross-country tour (support vehicle, meals and lodging included) to farms and sustainability sites, integrated with our award-winning permaculture design and regenerative leadership certification and much more — this program will change your life.

This three-month intensive course combines our Urban Permaculture and Regenerative Leadership Certificate training, followed by a Wilderness First Aid training before we head on the road cycling from Eugene, Oregon all the way across America to Washington DC (we’ll be roughly following the TransAM bike route – about 4200 miles), promoting and learning about sustainable living and intentional communities.

The stunning places you will visit on this program and the extraordinary people you will meet will challenge and inspire you..

Program cost:  $6000 regular rate pay just $4500 before September 1st. Payment plans available.
